96 f150 gas tanks cross feeding
hi all. I have the above truck and the tanks are cross feeding. From what i understand the tank the the feul ends up in is the bad fuel pump. In my case if I put fuel in the rear tank 1/2 of it if not more ends up in the front tank. Am I correct in thinking the front fuel pump needs to be replaced?
Secondly As I look for pumps to buy i see some that say side metal tank 18 gallons and side tank 19 gallons then both plastic or steal. Are all the pumps the same? How to find out if its a 18 or 19 gallon tank.. finding out if its plastic or steel was easy.. ?
thanks in advanced.. Shaun

Yes, your front FDM (Fuel Delivery Module) is bad. There are a couple of valves in there, if either one goes bad then fuel can leak into that tank under pressure from the other pump.
Tank size depends on truck configuration, you can find out what you have in the owner's manual. It will list fuel tank capacities for various configurations.

It's the entire module that consists of the electric high pressure pump, a mechanical jet pump, a couple of valves, and the fuel level sensor.
New FDM don't come with a new fuel level sensor, so you transfer your old one to the new one. It just bolts on the outside of the module. If you buy an aftermarket FDM it will come with bare wire ends that you connect to your existing wiring in the tank. They provide butt connectors in the box for you to do this with, but I prefer to use solder (rosin core, NOT acid core (don't use plumbing solder)) and heat shrink for a more reliable connection.

The top one is aftermarket. You'll splice them wires you see hanging off it into the existing harness, connect your existing fuel lines coming off the hanger (the round top plate) to it, transfer your fuel level sensor to it and you're good to go.
The bottom one is a Ford/Motorcraft FDM. Transfer your fuel level sensor to it, drop it in and go.
