Loose water pump pulley - damage.

My water pump pulley came loose. Godawful racket! Found two missing bolts, and the other two were stripped and wedged against clutch fan nut. The pulley truncated the exterior edge of the clutch fan nut, however, the threads and interior were not damaged. Pulley is toast along with serpentine belt. Can't decide if new WP is needed. The WP shaft has very slight movement, which may have vibrated pulley bolts loose, but didn't seem out of the norm. WP is not leaking. Do I need a new clutch fan since the nut is missing material on the outside edge. Should I replace the WP and clutch fan. Thanks in advance.

You should replace the WP and the fan's clutch. Take the fan off the clutch and see if the fan itself is damaged.

Got the fan off and it's fine. It was a royal PITA loosening the clutch fan nut. With the pulley bolts missing I couldn't use the clutch wrench to hold the pulley static. I ended up using a ratchet strap around the pulley, secured to the frame, a vice grip attached to the pulley wedged against heater hose inlet (top of water pump), a clutch fan nut wrench 1 7/8th from Oreilly's and a BFH. One smack and she came loose. FYI for anyone else in the same situation.

Freaking mess no doubt. Found a new pulley on Ebay for $70. Ford wanted 92.63 plus tax. Now looking for a clutch fan. Figured I'd upgrade the W/P using the IH pump with the inline filter. Saw a bunch of nice write ups on how to make it work. I'll let you know how it goes.

I dont run a fan on mine.

But dont get caught in a traffic jam on a hot day. It isn't very cool.

If I fix my AC, i'll put electric on.
The fans on tehse things are just too heavy.

I'm also going to install a 6.0 radiator fan. I do get struck in traffic towing my trailer so I don't want overheating issues. Rusty... sent you a PM.

i had a similar thing happen to me. Bolts came loose on the pulley and fell off. I beleive from the water pump wobbling. It shredded and blew my belt but luckily I was right by a ford dealership and put some new ones in and managed to drive the remaining 5 hours to work. A day or two later my truck started over heating and I peaked inside the engine bay and noticed the fan wasn't turning. The pulley was spinning on the new belt but it wasn't attached to the water pump 🙊. The pulley actually sheared right off and left a square piece of steel with four bolts on the water pump. I had to pull the rad and then the water pump and fan as one to get it apart.
