Clutch noise and air gap

Appearantly the same clutch that's on my 2004 F-250 6.0L has been used on several Fords for many years so I'm looking for some btdt experience. Cooling has been normal since new. On starting engine yesterday there was a high pitch noise very similar to an alternator or idler bearing going out. I ran ac a total of about 5 minutes in 5 to 60 secound segiments while looking for source of noise which turned out to be at ac compressor. I pulled compressor fuse and drove truck over 500 miles yesterday without farthur noise or any problem. The dealer quoted 5 hours labor which sounds excessive to me so I looked to see what is involved and decide wherther to tackle the job myself. I see reccomendations for air gap in the range of .014-.017 for new clutch. I have .030 clearance in mine. I have a hunch about this but would like experinced observations before moving foward.
