12 Pickups that revolutionized truck design

MSN has an article on its site today that has pictures of trucks they believe revolutionized truck design. The ’56 Ford F-100 made the list; they show a ’56 F-100 Big Window Custom cab.
I must say I did like the old Dodge Power Wagons...

Did you forget the link, Ed?

Personally, I would disagree that the 56 F series was revolutionary. While it may be considered a high water mark in design, it was the 4th year of the bodystyle with a minor facelift in the windshield and door area, then thrown away totally the next year. 1957, otoh, was revolutionary, with totally incorporated slab sides that every Ford truck built since has followed. MHO.

Here's the article link. 12 Pickups That Revolutionized Truck Design

I have to agree with the 1994 Dodge Ram. I distinctly remember that time period, and Dodge took design to another level and forced Chevy and Ford to kick it up a notch before the decade ended.

Some good points, some I don't agree with. But for those who are curious :
3 Chevys
2 Dodges
4 Fords
1 Hudson
1 Studebaker
1 Toyota

There are some really sketchy things in articles like these. Like the statement that the 40-41 Fords remained largely unchanged until the '48 F-series. I guess jailbars didn't happen?? The Hudsons are neat and pretty but clearly did not revolutionize the truck market. Same for the Stude.

I have to agree with Doc on the Rams, I wanted one so bad it hurt. Glad I didn't buy one tho!

Here's my list.....
1. the buckboard, this was the truck before trucks.
2. 1909 Model T roadster or Coupe.....for the next 2 decades pickups were cars converted by the removal of the turtle deck and replacing it with a "buck board" style bed.
3. 1926 Model T pick up. Fords first purpose built LD truck
4. 1931 Diamond T express body. Big truck makers like Diamond T, Mack and White innovated vehicle design in the late 20s early 30s with things such as hydraulic brakes and open drive lines. They also offered smaller versions of their big trucks with express beds.
5. 1941-46 ****** MB/Ford GPW, CJs and Post war Wagons and Trucks....The War Baby or 1/4 ton military truck spawned the SUV and the 4x4 to the masses.
6. 1948 Ford F Series The first of the F-trucks and the first Ford Truck to divorce it'self completely from car styling...never to return.
7.1948 Dodge One of the first to offer front sheetmetal that blends into the doors.
8. 1942-68 Dodge Power wagon the first full size 4x4 available to the masses.
9. 1955 Chevrolet Cameo. The first of the purpose built "sport trucks".
10. 1962 Chevrolet Torsion bar IFS one of the first in low priced trucks.
11. 1965 Ford F100-250 Ford's first IFS. Except for sheet metal this design would remain basically unchanged until 1997.
12. 1994 Dodge as mentioned
13. 2015 Ford aluminum as mentioned.

I like the list, but I'd replace the Toyota with the Datsun mini-truck of the 1970's.

I honestly think that any of MSN's "lists' are compiled and researched by an intern writer who has no real knowledge of the subject matter and relies purely on google for content.

For instance, they recently ranked Maine as a top place to live. Despite having snow 3/4's of the year, fiercely high taxes, high unemployment, general poor health in most of the population, low incomes, poor job growth and a general high cost of living. Probably because the writer once spent a 3-day weekend at Bar Harbor during one of our sunny summer days.
Didn't MSN also have a list of best used cars to buy that we discussed here in one thread and we all thought that most of the choices were comical and made no sense?

I like F-ONE's list instead.
