Gas mileage with modern engine

I know it comes up from time to time on what to expect out of one of F-1s with modern drive trains. Now that we have a few miles on the wife's 52 I was able to get the first figure. I will update as the miles pile up.

1952 F-1
2013 Ford 5.0 Coyote 420 HP
Tremec 5 speed
3.50 rear gear

120 miles of mostly freeway and some city
45 miles of country roads and city
I drove one leg on the second trip and lets just say I was asked if I had started a rear tire replacement fund yet.
21MPG

Sounds about right. a lighter right foot and short shifting into 5th whenever possible would probably get you another 3-4 MPG. A couple dyno pulls and tweeks by a good tuner would likely pay for itself in a couple months.

Well Mike you did a lot better than me yesterday. I filled the Mustang when I left Prescott and when I got back I pulled into the garage that 20 gallon tank was on E. But I did have a lot of fun.

Glad you had a good time, us too. Got poured on on the way home, found a couple more things to do on the truck as a result.

Ax, the coyote has a factory tune that is running perfect. No way i'm going to mess with that. I have been helping friends wit their tunes though. A couple have nightmare stories about so called tuners. I was asked this weekend if I would consider fixing the tune that was recently done for $600.00 by a very reputable shop and the car is barely drive-able.

My feelings are if it's working don't ask for trouble.

After some of the fun factor of that 420 HP we will see if we can get that other 3-4 MPG though.

Nice!!!

I am getting ~18mpg with a heads cam intake 302 making around 300 hp through a AOD trans. I bet a manual trans would do 1-2 mpg better and I can probably lean the tune a bit. But I am plenty happy with that.

21mpg is great!

Just an update to this post. I took a 450 mile trip to a car show last weekend. 80% highway driving and the rest city. 22.5 MPG average for the entire trip. Did really good on the way home, all highway 25.5 MPG. Couldn't be happier, reliability, awesome power and good mileage. Oh and Lois took 3rd place in a field of 30 trucks, many full show with custom paint, leather interior, etc.

Wow! I'm not getting anywhere near that with my 302/AOD combo...I still have the 4.10 rear gears, it is carb, and I did have a very minor head gasket leak and I found a small vacuum leak, so we'll see how it does now that I've got it running very nicely...it was 'thrown together' to get it on the road several months ago.

I'm looking to put a 3.50-3.70 rear in it in the future, but for now, the original 4.10 is fine.

Encourage information for me. I'm hoping to get close to your results. Is your 5th gear a .63 or.68? I had mine changed to .73. At 75 mph and 5th gear, what RPM's are you turning?

Mine is the .64. Turning about 2200 at 75. Fifth gear is fine for level ground to small hills but if it gets steep a downshift is required.

Most of my in town driving gets me around 15mpg. Mild 350 SBC, edy carb, with T5 and 3.55 gears. I'm not driving for economy, so I get on it when the mood strikes. Road trips, 75mph ish on the interstate, return high 17's. Running the AC knocks about 1 mpg off that.
