The tap water here is so soft that the chem labs use it as distilled water. Now if you're pumping it out of a well and it's loaded with heavy minerals like iron, etc. then you'll want to get distilled water in there eventually. But don't waste it flushing trash out of your engine block.

A cooling system is nothing more than a bunch of passageways that coolant (water/antifreeze) flow through to take heat from the engine. It's not a precision system like the oil where you can't afford to have hunks of stuff floating around in it. You won't hurt anything long term using tap water.

Your system doesn't need to be spotless. It would be nice but it just doesn't matter. What matters is that it doesn't over heat. I just drained my system to put new manifold gaskets in it. I've owned this truck 17 years and every time I have to drain the coolant it comes out with a tad bit of rust. When I pour the old coolant back in I just don't put in the last few ounces that are loaded up with rust dust.
That makes sense. I live in a big city and don't use well water. I think I'll give the hose a shot. It's not just a little bit of rust color, it's just all rust color. Thankfully it's not like sludge though.

It unfortunately just poured down rain and since I work out in the elements I wasn't able to get underneath it - unless I wanted to gear up for some mud football or the likes. d:

Are these drain plugs you speak of on the grille side or the firewall side above the oil pan? I tried to look at the grille side above the oil pan, but didn't see anything that looked like it would drain something.

I had already purchased a few wally world boxes of distilled water, so I went ahead and ran some of it through again and it's looking cleaner just after 2 flushes. I've got another round of distilled water in it and was going to go pick some flush cleaner and run that to see if that helps. I think I'm JUST about there.

On the plus side it's been running good; needle gets about 1/4 up, but still on the cooler side even after 30 minutes of running over and over.

Most Engine block drains are on each side of the block neat the motor mounts. Some are hex head plugs & some may be allen hex socket type like 3/8"

Excellent. I'll be on the look out for those tomorrow. I think I'm nearly there! Woohoo!

Like Jeff said in a earlier post the block drain once removed may have to run a screw driver into the threaded boss to get it to loosen up the rust before it starts to drain anything out.

But it would be so much better to remove the block freeze plugs and clean out between the cylinders where it really matters, but they are not always ez to install at times & the angles their sitting at.
