7.3L IDI in '66 F250

Been lurking here a while and thought I should show you guys what I am working on.
How it started...

Then the nieghbor had a '90 F350 that was just sitting there, so after stripping it and shortening the frame and rebuilding the 7.3.....

Then just had to make '66 body fit '90 frame, only required slight modification to cab mount and radiator support....

Now for some color...

and up to speed on where it is today....

I will update you guys as I get more done, I have had it running and just got the parts for the 3G swap so I hope to drive it around the farm a little by next week. Thanks for looking!

Cool build. I really like how you integrated the gauges. Are you leaving the engine NA or do you plan on turboing it eventually? I love the build! Keep updating it!

Probably leave NA for now but if a turbo comes my way I will probably put one on it. Thanks for the compliments

How was the body mounting? I'm about to do basically the same thing but with a 69 on an 85 chassis. It doesn't look too far off, but then looks can be deceiving. Did you have to cut the firewall at all?

The only thing I cut were the bottom of the front fenders to give a little more clearance when turning the tires. The firewall is still original all be it with different mounting holes for accessories I did alter the transmission hump for additional clearance. I also cut the '90 radiator surround and mated it together with the '66 surround so I could use the big radiator out of the '90 and still mount my front end without a lot of additional fab work.

This is a great project, thanks so much for sharing. What are your plans for a bed?

I plan to use the original bed off the '66. It is a longbed with the toolbox in the side. I plan to make some custom dually fenders and probably a custom rear bumper. This will be my tow rig on the farm when its done so gonna keep it simple not too extravagant

[voice of Homer Simpson drooling]Whhhaaahhhh, built-in-bed tool box, mmwmwoooaaahhhh.....[/voice] They never shoulda dropped that feature. I'd lurrrve to see that kind of box in any modern truck.

That is some superb fab work under the hood, what with the clutch hydraulics and all. 'Course, I wouldn't call this putting an IDI engine "in" a '66 truck. This is more like putting a '66 cab/bed ON an IDI truck frame. Still a tremendous project, and great truck ****.

Dually fender idea - look around for an old flareside bed from that era, and fab in the flareside fenders into the existing bed. If you could retain the running boards and create some extensions to them for the cab, that would complete the look. I'm trying to remember, did Ford ever do the little cut-out in the flareside fender for an outside-the-bed spare tire mount way back then?

Yes the 60s flaresides were notched for the spare outside. The 70s were not and pretty much identical fenders.

One thing the 70's driver side fender has is a hole in it and a fuel filler neck for a rear fuel tank. The 8 foot flaresides have another fuel filler above the step. They have a separate vent hose, but could possibly be made to work on the IDI fuel tank. I've got a set of those filler necks sitting in my scrap recycle pile so if you're interested speak up.
