I had that happen without towing in my 06. They replaced the TBC.

I agree you can get it with and without a trailer in tow. If in tow, it may pop up if the trailer is feeding back and my first thought was to check that first. If no trailer, it is the truck and most likely the TBC itself.

This truck is starting to puzzle me , another it has heated mirrors that stay on all the time , there is no switch to turn heat off?

Heated mirrors stay on no matter what.
TBC fault can sometimes be attributed to a poor + battery cable connection to a battery. I've had this in the past and it just went away.
