IFS with a Y Block?

Have any of you guys installed an IFS and still ran a Y-Block?

The motor in my truck is still strong, and it has the stock Overdrive behind it. My plans have been to run a dropped axle and some Posies springs, but by the time I do the math, and consider potential resale value, I think that I would be better off to go with an IFS.

I did talk with Steve, at Industrial Chassis, and he confirmed that he's done it before with a front engine mounted Y Block, but I was curious if anyone's done one with a Mustang II type crossmember and rack and pinion.

Feedback is most appreciated.

I just rencently put an '03 crown vic craddle in mine. The only thing I had to do to my Y-block was remove the oil breather on the side of the block. I could have just shortend the tube an inch or two because it was hitting the power stearing lines, but I decide to just remove it and blank off the hole. We did the intire install with the engine in place.

yeah, I have seen the Crown Vic installs, but I don't want to have the wide track width that requires the deeper wheel offset.

Are you still running the stock front motor mount, or did you have to go to the side mounts?

I did not have to touch the motor at all other than the oil breather, still on the front engine and bellhousing ear mounts. I am running a '65 9-inch rear and I put adaptors on the hubs to convert from the 5x5.5 to the 5x4.5 bolt pattern so I can run the same rims front and back. This lined the front and rear widths perfectly. I am running 235/55/17's all around and this fits perfect in the wheel wells for my taste. We did move the craddle 1 1/8 inch forward to center the wheels in the front.

Yes it will work, I have a friend who did it to his 55 but he had to change out his long tube headers as they would not work with the Mustang 2. He was able to use ram horns to clear the M2

A couple questions I have:
bchrismer: Why do you think a buyer wanting a truck with stock driveline would not also rather it have stock axle/suspension than IFS?

Blue55: How are you venting the crankcase if you blocked off the vent tube? I have seen unvented crankcases that exploded when blowby fumes accumulated inside. It also allows water vapor to boil off and escape. That tube has a very important function.

LOL. AXracer, I figured that question would come up.

I actually believe that the engine and overdrive transmission will be a detractor to a future owner. Most folks tend to be scared of old motors and transmissions that they are not familiar with. Me, on the other hand, in the past 3 years have put about 15,000 on my stock '40 1/2 ton stake truck.

Whenever it is time for the truck to go down the road, I am sure that there will be an option for the new owner to take it with or without the motor and transmission.

sweet ride. I have driven mine the past 8 years with the stock suspension but it was so worn out, and it is my daily driver (over 1,000 miles a month) so I finally went to the IFS and new rear springs. The stock suspension was making everything else rattle too much anyway. As far as the venting, right now I only have the oil filler tube vent breather and things are going well so far. I got the idea for doing it from the spare 272 I have, it had a blank out plate on it as well.

Does this mean that you don't want my parts when I change them out ?
