I have been dealing with the same decision. I could purchase a new truck with all the new fancy stuff or keep the truck that I have had since December 2001. While the new trucks are nice, mine still does what I need it to do so when the wife offered to purchase me a new vehicle, I kept the 7.3 and added a Chevy to the family

Fantastic car......my father added a 2013 Vette that Callaway has warmed over to his garage and he loves it. He also has a 911 C4S and prefers the Vette......

He worked hard for his money so might as well enjoy some of it.....

Don't know much bout Vette's, but that's a very nice car. I've wanted a side by side for a few years now so I picked up a Can-Am Maverick instead of the new truck.

i don't know about that, mufflers can get pretty hot

She is pretty though. I'd like a spin around the block in it. They sure have changed since the last one I drove in 1995.

The wife wants one of those Can-Am's as well, just don't have the space for it....I need a bigger garage. Still, the OP has a tough decision. Having a new truck with the updated tech would be nice, I just don't use the truck too often anymore so I am going to fix a few issues and get it painted and see if I can get another 10-15 years out of it.

Mid-life crisis would be trading the wife in for a 20 year old and changing my wardrobe over to a bunch of Ed Hardy stuff. Getting a new vette is just another sports car. I look at it as more mid-life affordability over crisis as I could not afford this in my younger years.

Decisions

great thread, i have been going through these thoughts the last couple months. Finally just couldn't bring myself to spend more on a new truck than I did on my first house... (ok, im getting old....)

Took a look at my truck, wrote down everything that would make it look and function like newer truck.

headlights.. 160
1 new mirror, damn ducks... 80
repaint the grill 8 bucks and a six pack of beer
replace beat to death stock bed with new flatbed, 3k installed for base model
full detail and polish of chrome parts, a weekend and a lot of beer
fix this latest round of random oil leaks so they wont happen for 10 more years, 350

That's roughly 3600 total, Already have done a lot over the years as can be seen in the signature, its a solid truck, rust isnt an issue here, it was in southern NV before I had it. Even if I really splurge and get the cab/front clip repainted, it is equal too or less than a years payments on a new truck.

The wife does have a nice 2012 Cruz we use for our daily driver(fortunate that we can carpool together, is a big savings with 45 mile commute), and they amenities are nice, but I don't really need them in a truck bouncing through the backwoods of MT.

always a painful decision when time to upgrade large purchases for sure.

Heck, I thought it was law that you HAD to wait till the wife turned 40 then break her in on two 20's. You know, for walkin around wives. Or Front Pocket wives if you prefer. How you spend 'em is your business

I like the 6.7. We have one for a ranch truck and it is comfortable, quiet But, if you or anyone has time to watch a guy on Youtube called "joediesel187", you'll keep your 7.3 He is a Ford Service Technician in CA and has a few videos on warranty work for the 6.7. I would not own one even if I could afford it. Don't do it. Get that list out for your 7.3 and I think you'll be pretty darn happy.

I'm the OP. I decided against a new truck. Mine is just in too good of shape to drop the kinda coin for 2-3 year old truck with close to as many miles as mine has. I still cant fathom where people drive their brand new trucks these days to put that many miles on it!

Instead of a new truck, I bought the Can-Am Maverick side by side. All my buddies have the RZR, I wanted to try something different and BRP (mother company) puts out quality products

Glad you are comfortable with your decision, that is awesome. If my 7.3L wasn't rusting heavily etc. I would love to have kept it for a few more years. And you are right about the miles......I bought my Ram used with 17,900 miles and I have only 20,100 now and I baby it like I did the 7.3 from a miles standpoint. about 5,000 per year.......if I were putting 25K+ on it a year, I would never deal with a newer low mileage vehicle, just wouldn't be worth it and within the first 18mos you would be buried under the value vs. remaining loan.
