Rough idle in F150 4.6 2002 Ford Dealer says Normal cant fix

These are overhead cam engines and don't have pushrods. It is a poosbility about the cams though. It seems to run ok. More power would be better, but I guess that I am used to the 460 in my 77 that has way more torque. The truck runs ok, it just seems like it takes alot of throttle to get going even with an empty 1200lb trailer. Without the trailer it seems ok. I guess it will just take some getting used to when going from 460ci to only 330ci. The 77 has a C6 and 3.00 gears with 32" tires which is equal to 2.75 gears and the 2001 has 3.55 gears and a lower first gear, but I guess it is true when they say that there is nosubstitute for cubic inches.

Hey LxMan,

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but does your 01 5.4 still have this symptom, or did you finally figure it out? I was talking to a friend of mine and mentioned that I should do a search on harmonic balancers. He recalls reading somewhere that the crank bolt in some cases actually stretched causing a harmonic vibration. Have you ever heard of that?

Thanks

It still does it off and on. More so when warmed up. I've pretty much gotten used to it now. It still runs great and has much better power since I got a Diablosport Predator. Still a small miss/vibration, but no problems now @ 50,000 miles.

I kind of scanned through the posts in this thread but did anyone mention the IAC? I "had" the same prob until I removed the IAC and cleaned it. It smoothed out for about 3 months them came back. I cleaned it again and away it went, but is coming back again. I am going to replace the IAC but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Now his truck had only 9000 miles on it when it started but has been known to happen many times for a part to fail fairly quick on a new vehicle. It just happens.

It's not the IAC. It is basically a combination of an emission lean idle and camshaft duration. It hasn't caused any problems so I am not too concerned.
