Got a little work done yesterday morning. Took the hood off and then started on the front fenders. Had difficulty going the piece by piece route so we figured out what was needed to remove as a whole...















Will work on separating the front end pieces this week.

Question about the brake drums. It has started to get a little more difficult to roll the vehicle. Definitely getting more drag from the brakes. I tried to remove the drums and didn't have much luck. I searched around and it seems the "bang it with a hammer" approach is the best way to go. We don't plan on using them in the long run but I would prefer not to ruin them also. Advice?

Also, I wanted to start looking for a C4 transmission. I found one locally that came out of an older Bronco. It has a "deep sump" aluminum pan. Will this work for this truck? What are good donor vehicles for a C4? We are going to be putting in a 302.

Bang with a hammer is the way I got mine off, as do most people. Just more than a tap and less than a wallop... Not sure about the deep sump, but it looks good from here. I am going the 302/C6 route only because I practically had one given to me. Looks like you are making great strides! Mine looked like yours about 18 months ago, and I'm just now getting the 302 dropped in. It sure helps to have help around. Enjoy!

The deep sump pan is awesome usually. It just allows more fluid in the pan to keep the trans cool if its working hard. However that trans isn't the best option as its set up for a 4x4. If you could get a different tail shaft for that trans it would work fine. Honestly less work to get a trans out of a rear wheel drive vehicle.

You are making good progress. Keep plugging along.
These are the obvious questions on the brake drums, but does this model have the screws holding the drums on?
Also, did you loosen the pad adjusting screw?
Even after that, the hammer is needed.

I was trying to loosing the adjustment screw on on that I was working on but honestly was having a rough time determining if it was actually moving or not. Where would the screw be located?

The adjusting screw is accessed through a slot in the back of the brake "plate" (proper name?) Takes a flat blade screw driver in there (or a proper brake adjusting tool!) to move the cog.

Thanks Doug. I am familiar with the adjustment screw and actually have the tool for adjusting it. It just doesn't seem to move. I think the head of the tool is just sliding off the ridge of the adjustment wheel. I'll try again. Up or down to loosen?

When I couldn't get the drums off of my '56 F100, heating it up with a mapp torch and then hitting the drum a few times with a hammer popped it right off. Good luck with your build.

This should help, note it shows tightening... fronts are the same
