air intake modification

i have a 94 aerostar with the 3.0 and was wondering if there is a way to modify the air intake box, or if its possibly to put on a cone filter from idiot zone. i want to get some more air to thios engine cuase it seems to be choking. its not a serious problem, just kinda low on power. i also want to do some high flow exuast but that will come later. i kinda of want to do a clomplete cold air intake if anyone can give me some tipson custom building one. im not really sure if the ranger 3.0 and the aerostar 3.0 is the same engine but i hiope you guys xcan help.

Ah-ha... another Aero guy. I have the 3.0L in my shortie, and have the same problem as you. The engine is identical to the one in the Ranger (although air boxes and other minor things may be different due to the engine being under the dash). I pulled the silencer cone out of my airbox (~2" round inlet to the box from the silencer = restriction, it's now closer to 3" square), and it helped a little on the top end. I'll probably make a new air tube as well (looks pretty restrictive as well) out of plastic but keep the airbox (maybe with a cone) as a heat shield.

I have a 97' taurus with the vulcan engine, and I took out the entire fender snorkle. just have the hole going into the filter box. I also took off the muffler completely, but kept the resonator. souds great and runs fast. Only problem is that it is backfiring when i hit the gas and then let off.

While you are at it, take a grinder and get rid of the air bridge in the MAF. That will complement nicely the changes upstream in the airbox.

I took the defletor tube out of my MAF, and now it idles rough when it first starts. After I rev the engine, it goes away. There is a posting on the forums here that will explain the pros and cons of that. I really didn't notice any gain in HP, either

Let it run a while. Mine did the same thing until the engine warmed up. It seems that the computer had to learn the difference. Now it runs great.

air intake modification

A guy told me that the duratec 3.0 in my taurus had a stock CAI and that removing the intake silencer it would still be in the fenderwall hence still CAI. It is a 2002 taurus. Sound correct? I have the vulcun in my truck. It does not work this way I believe. I had thought of putting a ram intake in it but decided against it since I believe it is currently getting cold air. Can I remove the silencer on the vulcun and extend the filter box to still recieve cold air and expect performance gains from this. Where will the bottlenecks be after this mod.

Also, did you clean the wite in the MAF? I used contact cleaner from Radio Shack and it helped.
