Towed a horse trailer and dumped a bunch of tranny fluid
#31
I got to thinking last night, and remembered than I scanned for codes again before I did the test tow. I got a 99, which is EPC circuit failure. ECP is Electric Pressure Control, right? I remembered seeing that that was one of the circuits in the harness that I replaced.
I wonder if I didn't get a good connection when I joined the splices for the circuit. I'll chase that before going after the front seals

Well, I'm at a loss for what to do. I checked with my voltmeter, and both EPC wires were getting power at the harness. Continuity through my splices were just fine. With the harness plugged in, I checked for continuity in the wires mentioned here as well:
http://www.atraonline.com/manuals/general/tetdv/tetdv-c4k.htm
All of it checks out. I don't know why I'm still getting the EPC code.
I'm tempted to just replace the seal, but I'd prefer not to if the problem is electrical. It's a lot of work, and I don't want to do it for nothing.
Or would a failed EPC / slow flow even cause it the tranny fluid to overheat?

So I'll need to drop it and replace the seal after all. Just like you said in the beginning of this thread. The other things needed doing and I imagine was the initial cause of my problem, but I guess I can't be a lazy slacker after all.

I don't know if anyone is following this thread anymore, but for the sake of posterity at least, I have an update...
So I FINALLY finished replacing the front seal. Man, that sucked. I did the o-ring on the pump while I was at it. It was only a couple of bucks more when I ordered the seal. Good thing, because it was leaking as well.
Anyway, so it's all back together now. When I went for a test run, though, it wouldn't shift into third. No codes.
I've read that it could be either the MLPS or 2-3 shift valve.
I lean toward the MLPS because I rinsed the tranny housing while it was out - there was old leak-sludge everywhere. I covered it up, but maybe I got water in the sensor. And it shifted into 3rd just fine before.
But since there's no codes, it could be the 2-3 valve.
I'm going to order a new MLPS first. I'm done for today, though. Tired of being under the truck.

You've done great so far, these trans can be a handful at times, but they can be made bulletproof, and thanks Randy, it's always a pleasure to read through your contributions. Papa, you might want to consider a shift kit for the trans also, it will help prevent overheating issues and reduce wear, mine has been great so far. The info is on the link in my signature.

Well, I replaced the MLPS and plug. The plug was all shot anyway.
Test drove and still no shift into 3rd. I suppose cleaning the 2-3 valve is next. I'm rather doubtful it's that, though, since it worked fine before.
I may just retire it. Let it be a farm truck or something. I think I mentioned before that I'm finding a bunch of stuff that the PO didn't take care of well. It's been rather frustrating
