BANG No reverse
Thanks Mark for the response. I realize something probably broke. I'm looking to understand most likely part etc. I don't even know which tranny is in this truck. And whether it is a fairly robust trans or problematic. My tranny days started and ended with the AOD thru 4r70w respectively. Did a few axod and e also. Even a a4ld or two. Any clues or gotchas would help me proceed. Thanks!

Yep, I've had two transmissions do it.
A A727 in a '69 340 Dart out at a shop one day in mid '70s, I put it in reverse and "pop" ..... no back up. It'ld go forward because it has a one way clutch that also works in low .... (the low/rev band only applied in low when the gear selector was placed in 1 or R ..... but while in D there is no band apply when starting out, just the one way clutch).
Years later had same exact thing happen with 1980 Plymouth Gran Fury police car.

Same happened to us with a '75 Dodge van. Bang noise, no reverse band, no reverse. We were ~~ 200 miles from home in Yosemite. Drove it all the way home, and made sure we never had to "back up". Hey! We can do this! Drove it to the tranny shop the next work day, and they fixed it right up.
