Engine swap.. Is this a downgrade?????
I have a 460 carb motor right now in my 79 250 4x4. I have a friend that has a 351 our of a 93 lightning with efi. He said he would swap if I wanted fuel injection. So want to know what you think. Inject the 460. Or go with the 351??? I know about the work to swap the 351 in

You'll need all the engine wiring harness, engine processor, sensors and engine accessories but, what an engine that would be!

If I was going to install a 5.8L F150 Lightning engine, I would also install a '98-'04 Ford 4R70W 4-spd. automatic overdrive transmission from a 3.8L Mustang, 4.2L Ford F150 or a 5.0L Explorer. It would require a stand-alone shift controller but, it's a hoss of a transmission.

Just wondering what the difference is between a lightning 351w and a regular 351w? Unless it's some crazy rare or well built engine id stick with the big block personally.

There were 4R70Ws in 4-wheel drive F150s and 5.0L Explorers.

There are also two primary versions of this transmission; one for 4.6L/5.4L engines and one that's compatible with Ford engines that have a 'Windsor' bell pattern on the back of the block.
It's easy to determine which type of engine the 4R70W will fit by looking at the number of bolt holes where the starter bolts up.
If there are (3) starter bolt holes in the bell housing, the 4R is for a 4.6L/5.4L engine (won't work for a 5.8L Lightning engine).
If there are (2) bolt holes in the bell for the starter, it WILL fit a 'Windsor' block. --this includes 240/300 inline six, 289, 302, 5.0L, 351W, 5.8L and 351C.

There's only 5 hp difference in the factory horsepower rating of the 460 vs. the 5.8L Lightning engine. The 5.8L Lightning fuel injected engine is VERY receptive to engine improvements, to boost this hp rating much higher.

My truck is a '69 F100 short bed, currently with the stock, tired, old inline 240 with a C-4 automatic.
I have a 5.0L H.O. fuel injected engine from a 1990 Mustang GT and a 4R70W transmission from a '98 3.8L Mustang to eventually put in my truck.
I would LOVE to have an SVT 5.8L engine to put in my '69 Ranger, instead.
I'm going to rebuild the '98 4R70W and the '90 Mustang H.O. 5.0L engine but, this is what they currently look like.
When the 5.0 was sitting in my '68 Mustang.
....currently, on the engine stand waiting for its turn to get some attention.
After I got back from Pick-N-Pull with the 4R ($138.00 for everything).
After I gave the 4R a bath with the pressure washer.
The truck these items will be going into.
....and, here's its (current) tired 240.

Is it a downgrade? Depends on what you like/want. Modern EFI & more efficient engine vs torque and tradition.
If you go with the new engine, there is quite a lot of conversion. Transmission and T case have been mentioned. Also the fuel system. EFI needs high pressure fuel. Probably best is a low pressure electric pump feeding a sump which feeds a high pressure pump. Takes some engineering, fabrication and money. Wiring and instruments would take some attention also.
Hopefully the "new" engine is in solid shape and does not need rebuild itself.
Personally, if the 460 is in decent shape, I'd keep it and maybe add EFI.
