OK, I'm done with the conjecture. It almost certainly varies by state, but for those of us in Texas the ultimate answers are all found here:
TRANSPORTATION CODE CHAPTER 547. VEHICLE EQUIPMENT
TRANSPORTATION CODE CHAPTER 547. VEHICLE EQUIPMENT
Sec. 547.352. ADDITIONAL LIGHTING EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS. In addition to other equipment required by this chapter:
(1) a bus, truck, trailer, or semitrailer that is at least 80 inches wide shall be equipped with:
_____(A) two clearance lamps on the front, one at each side;
_____(B) two clearance lamps on the rear, one at each side; aka the yellow/red lights on dually fenders
_____(C) four side marker lamps, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear;
_____(D) four reflectors, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear; and
_____(E) hazard lamps that meet the requirements of Section 547.331;
..........
(6) a vehicle at least 80 inches wide may be equipped with:
_____(A) not more than three front identification lamps without glare; and aka the tripple light under the tailgate
_____(B) not more than three rear identification lamps without glare.

Yep, thanks. F-250, 3.55 diff, Lariat ultimate pkg, tail gate step, navigation, i dunno tons of crap, the original window sticker was $62,800 so its pretty fully loaded, albeit 2012, not 2016... It is in excellent shape, but not brand new, so I wont be as **** over trying to ensure nobody touches it, breaths on it, or even looks at it wrong.

check your local laws.
in NYC, f-250 needs an exception to get pass plates and with no pass plates you can not park in residentual areas as well as go on parkways.
an f-350, has the same exceptions rules, but in addition, the close to 7000lbs empty weight will put you over the max for parkways.
to get an exception , for pass plates, there are various use options such as a camper top.
fyi, f-150 may slides in under the wire of 5500lbs. no plate hassles, no parkway hassles, and an f-150 has a pretty respectable load rating if you can get by with a lighter duty truck.

It use to be the Dealers here always had clearance lights on all of the F350s on there lots but not anymore. Seems allot of Buyers don't care for the clearance lights so anymore it is seldom you can find them on a New F350 SRW.
I went with the F350 over the F250, the same truck between the two was only a difference of $700 and yes the F350 will have Clearance lights.
Here in NM the registration is a little higher for a F350 Vs a F250 but nothing to get in a uproar over.
