Slight leakage in rear glass weatherstrip?

Hi!

I noticed a tiny leakage in the rear glass weatherstrip when it's raining. I inspected it, and it looks fine so I attempted to clean it and the glass, but it didn't help. Is this a common thing? What's the best to use for cleaning and renewing the seal?

I guess maybe the rubber is getting too hard to seal well, and if that's the case I guess the only cure is a new weatherstrip...

Check the hinges. If they have a lot of play then the solution is to replace them because they're the reason the glass is not being held tight to the weatherstripping.

I don't think I have any play in the hinges at all, I'll check that though as I didn't think of it. Anything else I could try? I'm gonna try the old silicone grease treatment, but I guess if that doesn't help I might be looking at replacing the seal..

I've never seen weatherstripping wear out in 10-years, that's why I'm figuring loose hinges, or possibly the latch isn't pulling the glass in tight enough.

I do agree with you on that one, the seal doesn't look bad either, no cracks or anything.. The hinges seems to be fine, so I'm hoping the silicone grease will do wonders. Gonna pick some up tomorrow

Have you tried doing a paper pull test yet?

Yeah, that's a cheap and easy way to feel if there are any loose spots between the seal and the glass. It's also a good way to find those annoying air whistles that happen around the window and door seals when you're driving.

Well, found the problem. It's definitely not enough pressure on the seal. It does not seem to be any play or sign of wear in the hinges, are there any sort of adjustment on these?

Nope, no adjustment. Looks like you're stuck replacing the weatherstripping.

Well, either that or hinges. Maybe the constant heat for 10 years here in the blazing sun has caused the weatherstripping to loose its shape or something, not sure..

Yeah that's true too, I sometimes forget you are down near the equator.

My 2003 Expedition also leaks the same place. Only at heavy rain though.

I live in Norway, and no such thing as a blazing sun here.

I removed weatherstripping, and slightly bent where it mounts with a rubber hammer. It was enough to keep water out. A quick google search shows that many has this problem.

Hey! A fellow Norwegian! I'm from Norway as well, I just happen to live in the Philippines..

I think I found my problem though. When looking more closely today after I found the issue with the paper test last night, in daylight it's evident that the rear glass isn't sitting right, it's sticking out a bit in the top, and it's worst on the drivers side. And it looks like the hinges are slightly bent out of shape, and the one on drivers side is worse then the other one. I guess that means I have to look for a new pair on ebay.....
