Post Starter Click

I have an 89 F250HD with 67,000 miles. After driving an hour or so, I stopped for a few minutes and then tried to restart. I got a "clicking" sound. I put a charger on the battery and it started. Figured that battery was gone so I bought a new one. Worked fine for a while and then same thing happened. I've been told the starter motor needs to be replaced. Probably should mention that I have Doug Thorley headers. Would appreciate any input on what you think the problem may be.

Thanks....

Bill

Heat , Or rather excessive heat from the headers . It takes more power to run the starter esp when thay are located so close to a heat source like headers . If everything else with the starting system is fine , then youll likely need some type of shielding to keep the excess heat off the starter .

YES the heat of the headers is probaly taking out the starter. if you don't get a heat shield on it soon it will probably be toast, if it isn't already.

Just to save time, money and frustration I should have told you how to check if your solenoid is bad. When or if you experience this problem again you can "short" the circuit across the solenoid with a screw driver- across the two big terminals (something steel- screw driver, pliers or whatever). If the engine turns over it's your solenoid if it doesn't the next item to look at is your starter. This should isolate you problem. Hope this helps.
