I plan on getting back to this build next weekend. I have been a little side tracked since Doug of Montana dropped this off in May. Two family vacations and a Tom Cruise film called Mena that is filming here in Ball Ground Georgia has kept me busy. My wife, my sister, my brother in law, and myself were all background actors. Today was the last day of filming and I scored this pic! Big Tom Cruise fan all my life so here you go.....I know this is OT but I think because I had on my F1 shirt it qualifies as relevant and should be published!

Ron in Wisconsin just put a good looking 226 air cleaner on eBay as fyi, if you ask him he can probably find a shield also.

OK, here is another part I am unaware of. Heat shield. Where does it go and what is it shielding the heat from? I looked at the parts book pictures but found no heat shield in the carburetor/air cleaner area for a 226 in a F1 or F2.

It shields the exhaust manifold heat from the fuel pump. Part is 8ha-9437. It's rare to find....but aren't all 226 parts?

The heat shield covers the intake manifold on the radiator side. Mine is stock black.

Isn't its purpose to keep the front part of the intake warm in cold weather?

Could be, that would make sense also. I've always looked at the way the engine is designed, with the fuel and fuel line that close to the exhaust as dangerous. But I guess you could say that about anywhere you put it. I know my shield is in good shape and is around to stay regardless of its mission!

It certainly covers the intake. I'm unsure of the design intent.

I always thought it was to keep the heat away from the fuel line to prevent vapor lock. To me it looks like that was the intent.

Still working on the spare engine, getting it ready to put back together. Focus this weekend was breaking down the Holley 847 carb, cleaning everything, and getting ready for the carb rebuild and hardware kit from Mikes carbs. He also has a good video out there for the 847 for my 226 friends. I also picked up a nos fuel pump, any good tips on getting a good quality modern fuel diaphram for it?

Took the old truck down to the cruise in this weekend to show off my new tires! I follow all the threads you guys post on the steering boxes, but let me tell you taking those old dry rotted Remington's off and putting new rubber on corrected all of my problems. I am not going to touch a thing now on my box.

New tires are probably the biggest bang for the buck of any change you make to any vehicle. Looking good!

The latest advice that I have heard is C&G from California for the fuel pump diaphragm. So far the one my friend put in his 47 6 cylinder sedan is holding up with the ethanol blend we are forced to use in Texas.

That heat shield is also used on the 254 COE engines where the exhaust manifold runner is on top of the intake manifold. I figured it was to deflect the heat and fan draft downward to aid the road draft tube. Hmm.

This weekend I worked on rebuilding the carb. I finished last night along with my modified air filter (old school bath look but modern paper filter inside). I was reading my manual today and noticed my top air horn doesn't have the same screw placement as the 7ht9510. It matches the one exactly in my truck now and all of the parts in the 847 kit were identical. So is it an 847 or something else? Notice the screw hole in the gasket not used.

Gasket sets are usually made to cover every possible variation of a carb. Could be some other variant has a screw there.
