New truck has the worlds largest key

Is there any way I can get a smaller key made for my new 2015 king ranch?

I'd much prefer a regular small size key with a seperate fob to remote lock/start the truck.

On my 2003 7.3 I have a key ring that seperates in half. I can leave the key in the ignition, unclip the other half of the key ring, and lock the doors with my key fob. That way I can leave the truck running w/ doors locked. I'd like to figure out a away to do the same.

With a smaller key I could also put a spare hide a key on the truck somewhere and not have to worry about the expensive factory one.

It has the key pad on the door but I dont trust that when its -30 *F and covered in ice.

I don't know of any Ford fob that will work with the 11-15 trucks. You can buy an 80 bit key and and program it yourself to get around the IKT. The only option I am aware is an aftermarket remote start or entry system that has a separate fob.

I bought a key without the fob and after programming it, cut the brass key part off the integrated key leaving only the fob. I have tested it against the full fob with key and the range is still the same.

Have you tried just locking the door with the keypad with the truck running? If it works use keypad for re-entry

Why get a normal size key cut? It won't work in the ignition but I would think it would on the locks.

I'm more sad that you still need to use a key to start a $60,000 truck in 2015.

I live in the cold and ice and the touchpad has never malfunctioned for me. My truck came with two keys and I bring both mianly because I keep the tailgate locked and I like to get into the tailgate and not have to shut the truck off. (Yes, I know I could always get a $1 spare key made for that...)

Anyways, for the unattended idling, one key could stay in the truck with the other in my pocket. I don't find our keys any bigger than the old fat head chipped Ford keys anyways.

The older style, but newer tech, chipped keys will work and you can get it cut and self program it yourself. From what I understand, at least on the 2011-2014 models you can program the separate FOB to work as well. Not sure on the 2015. I have no reason to go back to that style FOB.

BTW, interesting tid bit. In Anchorage you are not allowed to leave a car idling without someone in it with a key in the ignition. You can only leave a car running without someone in it, with a remote start type device. Cuts down on the auto theft rate that way. You can be cited for unattended idling too.

Brett - Having owned and driven several keyless ignition vehicles. I still like having a key in the igniition. Even if in our case the ignition is connected to the BUS which tells the computer to start the truck. When I turn the key off, in that split second, the truck is off. No holding down buttons for several seconds.

You didn't see the key on the test drive? If it bothered me that much it would have been a deal breaker.

Simultaneously press the last two buttons on the keypad.

Other tips and tricks if you don't know them all.

I just keep laughing at this thread, thought I would share, if you think the ford key is large, have you seen the Wrangler key FOB, its about the size of a pack of smokes AND there are no alternatives, at least with Ford you can get a plain PATS key and have something smaller, this damn Jeep key is stupid large, or as Tump would put it it's HUGE, like really HUGE, nobody has a key so HUGE.. Tried to take a picture but it's so HUGE I just cant do it, sorry.
