I ordered a new set of vinyl from ACME. It seems to be great quality and everything fits well. Here's my issue -- there is a bar that sticks out of the sides of my bench seat that acts as a stop for the backrest hinge.



My new vinyl does not have a relief or slot for these (and even if it did, I'm not sure how I would stretch it over this. The old vinyl I had to cut off to remove as I couldn't stretch it far enough to pull it over.

Am I supposed to cut a slit in the vinyl? I'm worried I'll put it in the wrong place. Any tips??

 

Use a hairdryer to stretch the vinyl.

 

I'd grind off that metal. less weight ~
a bit. smooth it. heat vinyl. etc

 

Do not cut that post off. Now that you have the cover where you need it, carefully slice the vinyl so the post can protrude like it's supposed to. And when you get it all finished, take a pic of that seat so we can see it!

Yeah, that would have been a bad idea. It seemed superfluous when I had the top and back bench split apart. But when I put them back together I realized that was the piece that kept the back from tipping over too far backwards. It's definitely needed.

I ended up following roguerivers advice (even though I did it before he responded.....) I slit the vinyl and it turned out pretty nice. I'm pretty sure that my bench may have come out of an earlier or later truck. The front and back of the original seat cover was secured with a plastic channel -- the new cover was intended to use the plastic channel in the back and hog-rings in the front. I drilled some holes in the seat frame and was able to make it work with hog rings. Looks awesome.

I wish I had a before picture, but I'll definitely update you guys with an after picture this evening. It looks mint.

 

I took the old upholstery and laid it out so you guys can see what I was dealing with (btw.... the back section was PERFECT so if anyone needs a green back, let me know and you pay UPS. I'd hate to throw it out.)

I just did the same thing. My old cover had the holes cut in the sides for the metal bar/latch with a piece of heavy vinyl for re-enforcement around the slot. I cut that out and hot glued it to the inside of the new seat cover, so where I cut that slot it won't tear. My upholstery came from Mac's, and I was very happy with it, and it had the plastic channels that snap to the seat frame. Not that much hog ringing to do.

 

Wotan, I sent you my zip in a few PM's, and haven't heard back from you, did you get them ? I'm ok if you've changed your mind about the old seat upholstery, but would just like to know
