Question Backup camera not functioning

When I test drove my 2011 Expedition EL a week ago, the backup camera worked fine. However, about 2 hours after I took delivery I noticed the camera wasn't working. It seems that at some point during the certification process, someone stuffed something up (or it's a huge coincidence). The only thing electrical that they worked on was the climate controlled seat module and the accompanying relay, both of which were replaced.

Anyway, when I put it in reverse, a very dark, black and white image appears as if I'm trying to watch scrambled ****.

If I put the tailgate up and then put it in reverse, the image is slightly different in that the guidelines appear colored.

I suspect there is either a short, a loose connection, or perhaps the camera is simply shot. Anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions to narrow the problem down a bit?

I've already let the stealership know, but they want me to drive 2 hours to the stealership, leave it there, and have me drive back down to pick it up at some undetermined date (8 hours total driving and nearly $100 in gas). Moreover, it's not entirely clear whether I am going to have to fight to have them pay for the repair since the service manager is insisting the camera worked fine when it left his shop

Welcome to the forum, k9education; congrats on the Expedition! It sounds like you're going to try some things at home first, but let us know if you decide to get your dealership involved. How many miles are on it currently?

The stealership is going to replace the camera, although they're not entirely sure that it isn't a wiring/grounding problem. You have to love the level of disservice you get from Ford. The mileage is irrelevant to the matter at hand.

Today I disconnected the battery for 3 hours in the hopes of a reset- no luck.

Has anyone else had this problem? Fix?

thanks, Peter

Welcome to the site, Peter; let's see what I can do to help with your camera. What's your truck's model year/mileage? If you haven't already, I'd recommend making an appointment at your dealership for diagnosis. Once they've checked things out, I'll be able to research some options to assist.

Hi "Crystal",

I'm not sure if you are a computer or not but you have responded to my questions in almost the same manner 3 times. I thought the purpose of this forum was for Ford owners to share ideas and come up with some simple solutions to simple problems. If I need to get a dealer involved I will, but for now I'm hoping to get some informed advice.

Hey Peter,

Nope, I'm definitely not a computer; I'm a member of Ford's Social Media team. I reach out on forums like this one to help out with customer concerns. If you need me to step in and assist, just say the word. Hopefully some other folks will chime in as well.
