C4 or c6? Found a c4 off a 66 mustang(289ci) thats in good shape and im sure would fit the 300ci but then i found the c6 with small housing that is in good shape too. Ughhh choices choices lol
If you are staying with the 6 cylinder or small V8 the C4, rebuilt or in good shape, would be more than enough tranny. The C6 does eat some power, I have heard from 20 to 40hp.

Im just finding more c6's for sale than i am c4's... just not having any luck. Trying not to spend alot on a trans esp when there is more involved with the swap like column, driveshaft (maybe), rebuild etc

Remember the C6 has an integral bellhousing, so the transmission only fits one engine family. The small block/6cyl C6's are not that common, make sure you are looking at the correct transmission. The C4 has a bolt on bell housing so it can be installed on different engines with the correct bell housing.

Depending on what your rearend gears are, you might consider a late 80's-early 90's AOD.....

Here's a C4. Why is everything always on the other side of the country?

I'd insist on an automatic trans (and AC!) for my daily driver- a Ranger extended cab- but to tell the truth I don't shift my '65 with 3spd and overdrive too awfully much in traffic anyway. Running around in second gear is quite comfortable since the trans upshifts and downshifts smoothly from direct to OD. I never use the clutch pedal unless I need to come to a dead stop. If I time it right I don't even disengage the clutch when executing what we here in Colorado call a "rolling stop" even though low gear is non-synchronized. Remember, an overdrive trans is in freewheel mode at that point.
Yessir, I really like that Borg-Warner overdrive.

Mustangs didn't come with a 240 or 300. 170, 200 or 250 inline sixes came in the early Mustangs. Completely different six cylinder engines than a 240 or 300.

A valve cover from a 240, 300 or '87-'96 4.9L (fuel injected 300) will interchange. 4.9L valve cover has some differing 'plumbing' but, will bolt onto carbureted 240/300 engine.
