trans fluid tytpe? and change question

I know you said that the transmission fluid temperature has been normal, but I don't think the fluid would be brown and burned looking if it hasn't been overheated at one time or another. I think the basic principle is that for the transmission to fail the fluid has to first overheat and lose it's lubricating properties. The mechanical parts then fail in short order. If it were my truck I'd get an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler before I towed that 5th wheel.
Pretty sure that Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid isn't much more expensive than regular fluid and is considerably less than $15. I know what you mean about not wanting to spend $15 a quart when the money needs to be spent on other work.
I stuck one of those rare earth magnets to the bottom of the pan (on the outside) and when I pull the pan I find a collection of metallic powder where the magnet is. The magnet is about half the size of a hockey puck and once it's on there it just about takes a cold chisel to get it off.

I saw a Schaeffer's magazine ad years ago where they showed a graph of vibration level on an electric motor ball bearing before and after it was greased with a Schaeffer's grease. The vibration level dropped by about a factor of 10 on the "after" chart until I looked closer and saw that all they'd done was change the scale of the graph to fake the results. Been suspicious of Schaeffer's ever since and I've never used their products.

Not sure what 204 is? I buy it from a local distributor who gives me the sample kits. I get it in a case of 12 quarts.
Mobil 1 ATF is about $10 bucks a quart at O'Reilly's. Can't imagine that Schaeffer's sells theirs for $5. Good to know that the top builders use Schaeffer's though.

I think its about $7 a quart actually. There is two reasons I use Schaeffer's. First of all, the 15W/40 oil that they call 7000 is a partial syn oil. It has moly in it and I've been testing oil for 11 years. In all that time the only oil that didn't shear down in weight is the Shaeffer's. I pull really heavy and our hpop's are deadly on oil velocity. Second reason I use Schaeffer's oil is I got a John Woods trans and he puts Shaeffer's All Trans in it. BTS also uses All Trans.
