46 1.5 ton questions

Hey fellas, first things first, this truck is BEAT. So dont be too surprised when you see the pictures.

I have what I believe to be a 46 1.5 ton. Got it for a song, complete, rusty, but it still has a title. It was used on a farm not far from my current location for many years till it was parked in the 70s in a field. Some...not so bright person... took one of the heads off ohhhhh about 20 years ago? So the motor is locked up pretty tight. (Im either gonna un seize it and replace the pistons/rings, or just gonna swap a whole nother motor. A farmer friend of mine has a pile of flatheads in one of his barns)

I also cant get the trans to shift out of nuetral. The clutch pedal went and stayed on the floor, the door handles do nothing, the floor is gone, the windows are mostly gone, the brake pedal wont move, the passenger rear is locked up, and the hood wont latch right (even though thats the least of my problems, right? haha).

The steering wheel still turns, all the parts for the motor are there, the parking brake lever still works, the doors dont sag, and all the other wheels roll freely.

Sounds like a mess dont it?

First I want to get the passenger side duals off and unseize that brake. Does the brake drum on a 46 have the three screws Ive read about or am I taking apart the entire hub? (still need to buy a big enough socket for the lug nuts though)

Here's some pics.

It does look like a fairly complete truck. The grille bars looks good and the sheet metal is fairly straight. You can buy the cab floor from Northern Classic Truck. I say go for it but I'm kinda partial to the 1.5 ton. If nothing else you could part it out. Used parts are way better than the repop stuff out there today.

Hope you can save it, should keep you busy for a while!

I'm parting out one of those in much nicer shape if you need anything...the front clip is gone, but most everything else is still there. Pm me if interested.

Its real thin in spots. The lower half of the grill is just hanging. The hood sides are pretty thin. The door skins are seperating. The dash is pretty thin as well.

I dont really have a plan to restore. But to fix it enough to drive around should be simple enough.

Thanks for the tip on the floor. I was gonna make one from a barrel I have. Plexi for windows. Tires...or better yet non split rims are what Id like to find first.

Tinman, ill let you know when I dig into it.

The rear drums on a pre '48 big truck are mounted behind the hub and held on the hub with the lug bolts. The truck does look fairly straight and complete.

I'd love to see you bring this one back from the dead. I was pleasantly surprised at what Bernette on here did with a similar truck. He was undaunted by some major rust. Most of us wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I like your game plan of driving it the way it is. Some of us have extra parts around, but where do you live? I got the front clip from tinman, but the remainder is extremely nice metal too.

kind of looks like mine when i started my project. from looking at the pics the big thing i would worry about is the frame rot on top of the frame where the rear spring mount bolts to the frame. something like that would make me suspect of the rest of the frame possibly having some bad spots.

To get your drum off on the rear you gotta take the wheels off, and then pull the axle shaft out, then there will be a keeper, a nut, some bearings to pull off. That should allow you to remove the rear drum unless the brake has it held.
