Well there sure was a lot to look at....so much I almost forgot to take any pics. This is just the surface of what is in there, M1070 HET, deuce and a 1/2's, D-9 dozer, 5 ton dump truck's, 5 ton's trucks, forklift's, conex's, 60Kw gen set's.....and on and on.

I could get a M978A4 https://oshkoshdefense.com/variants/...-truck-tanker/

And the bldg is full of stuff!

You think they would notice if a couple 5 ton front axles went missing?

Good Morning Everybody!

Yes Rich. Two steer axles please.

I'm gonna try to knock out the Maxima's body work today.

Well, the '87 made it almost one week. Coming back from Lebanon it started backfiring and stalled out on I44.

I brought it home on the dolly of shame and am letting it sit for a bit. Its lucky there wasn't a convenient cliff to drop it off of. Nothing of any particular use in terms of codes so I'm guessing yet another electrical issue. Maybe the off brand ignition module. i have a spare, so I'm betting that's NOT it.

We're going out to do something with the kids this afternoon so it can just sit there and rot.

Dave, that's a bummer. I hope it's something easy to track down.

It's not the ignition module. I swapped with the spare I have and it made no difference.

The engine shakes like mad when cranking which is making me seriously considering the possibilty that the cam timing may have jumped or possibly worse. The other suspect is that I lost either the high pressure pump on the frame or the low pressure pump in the tank. I'm going to grab the wife and have operate the key while I try to see if I can hear the pumps cycle.

Ok guys - here's what I know...

Both fuel pumps are cycling on and I have pressure at the rail. Rotor is turning smoothly when cranked. If I disconnect the coil, it cranks nice and smooth. Reconnect the coil and it jumps and bounces and backfires through the exhaust. To me, this sounds like the cam timing possibly jumped on me.

Anyone care to wager a guess? I'd really like an easier solution if there is one...

Pull the distributor and see if you sheared the roll pin off the distributor gear. Pull the cap off before you do that. Spin the engine by hand until the rotor moves. Then spin it backwards to see how much play is in the chain. (if the rotor is stationary for any amount of time while you're turning the engine the other way, you have play in the timing chain. The longer the rotor stays stationary, the more slop in the chain you have. ......but I'm willing to bet money on the distributor gear.

I didn't get the Maxima done, but I got 80 % of the mud work done, so we're going in the right direction. Nothin' like trying to smooth out a golf ball.

I'll pop the dizzy out and check the gear. There's no point in checking for slop in the chain as the 300 uses a gear drive. OEM uses a fiber gear set which wear out and jump quicker that a metal gear set.

If the dizzy is ok then go for the timing set?

You can still check for slop in the timing by looking at the rotor. If it's a nylon gear set, it'll have slop if it's wore out. If it's good, it won't have any slop.

Alan - You are the man!

Pulled the distributor and, sure enough, the pin was sheared.

Now the real question is do I take the distributor back and get another under warranty or just drive the remains of the old pin out and install a new one. If I take it back, there's no guarantee that the replacement will have a sound drive pin.

Either way, I have the original distributor in taking up the space. I'll need to get the engine up to TDC and restab it in the morning, but I massively relieved that I don't have to tear into the engine.
