Anyone added power steering to a 77 f100?

I bought a 302 motor out of a 1985 F150 that has a power steering pump on it. My 1977 f100 came from the factory without one. Does anyone know how to add p/s to my truck & how much trouble is it. I appreciate anyone's experienced advice.

You didn't include a photo of the PS pump but, I would guess that it's a Ford CII (C-2) pump with the plastic housing and large filler neck (?). --the C-2 PS pump was in use from 1978 through about 2003.

If you have the PS pump, mounting brackets, engine pulleys and a Saginaw PS gear box w/the PS pitman attached, about all you would really need to make it a working system on your truck would the PS pressure and return lines for a '78 F100/F150 with a 302, a (shorter) steering column compatible with the saginaw box and you would need a V-belt.

The '85 Bullnose PS hoses would be too short, since their PS gear boxes mount in FRONT of the crossmember (front steer), right beside the PS pump. The Dentside steering gear box mounts further away, BEHIND the crossmember (rear steer), requiring the longer Dentside PS hoses.

I have a '69 F100 with a 240 engine but, I installed a C-2 PS pump, brackets and pulleys from an '82 Bullnose that came off of a 300. I have a '78 F150 Saginaw PS gear box/PS pitman arm and the front disc brake suspension from a '77 F100 under my '69, along with a tilt steering column from a '78 F150.

1965/77 Ford/Thompson P/S pump has a steel reservoir, the P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.

1978 and later Ford C-II P/S pump has a plastic reservoir, the P/S pressure hose connects to the pump w/a qwik connect fitting.

The Ford C-II P/S pump is also a different shape than the Ford/Thompson pump, so you'll need apropos P/S pump mounting brackets to fit it.

I will be picking up the motor Sat. I will post pics when I get it. Obviously you know your stuff. Time is something once it's spent that you can't get back. I can't thank you enough for your time.

If you currently have a manual steering gear box, you'll have to swap it for a PS (Saginaw) gear box. The hydraulics from the PS pump plumbs into the gear box. There's no provision on a manual steering gear box for the hoses to hook up.

Wrong configuration. It will need to come from ~ a '69-'79 model Ford truck or, buy new/rebuilt for same year range of trucks.

Two different types of P/S used in 1969.

Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD - 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.

Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001 - 1970/ F100/250 2WD & F350.

The (bigger) Saginaw steering gear box will be a better choice than the (smaller) Bendix gear box but, the Saginaw will require a shorter length steering column.

The Bendix unit tends to run hotter.

....The OP was also talking about putting the power steering in a '77 model.

When I added PS to my 73 I ordered a remanned PS from Red Head Steering and sent them my manual for the core. They are an excellent company to use. You will need to find a pitman arm for power steering which will be your hardest problem in the swap because no one makes them.
