2012 XLT 60/40 Rear Center Belt Pauls Stuck
EDIT: 2012 Escape XLT
As the title says, I did a bunch of researching online and this seems like a common problem. Do I really need to take the seat out of the car or is there a way to free up the pauls on/in the safety belt whilst the seat remains in the car?
Rear center seatbelt is stuck retracted all the way in. With the seat folded down there is 2-3" of play however nothing has made it decide to release the belt.
Can I use a deadblow hammer or rubber mallet and try to persuade it to release? Any other ideas?

Thank you and sorry for the confusion.
To recap, the rear center seatbelt (the 60 part of the 60/40 split) is stuck retracted all the way in. It will not come loose. Vehicle has aftermarket (Dealer installed) leather. I'm thinking this means my only option is to pull the seat out of the car, unzip the leather, gain access to the retracting wheel at the base of the seat back and fix the stuck pauls.
I see that this is a somewhat fairly common issue with these vehicles however I can't find a well-documented solution/fix. Just looking for some direction on the approach to fix as well as how to prevent this in the future.

Since it is a seatbelt and your vehicle is only 3ish years old this should be covered under warranty. There are certain safety and emissions items that are covered longer than other parts. I would check on that.
My niece had a Ford something car and the same thing happened to her the day before the family was moving to Texas from North Carolina. Ford had it fixed that day.

I'd recommend getting this in front of your dealership so they can get the belt straightened out for you. How many miles are on your Escape? I'll see what I can do to help out as well.

53,360 so we are just over the 50k warranty period.
It's usually a lot easier for me to just do it at home than it is for me to convince her to schedule an appointment at the stealership.
This Ford/American car thing is new to me but I own a bunch of German cars & motorcycles, some of which I have rebuilt or restored. I just did 4x wheel bearings on my car and I'm about to do a clutch in a few weeks. Nothing car related scares me as long as I have the tools to do the job. (It's been so long I may not have a full set of standard/English sockets haha)
On the other hand, if this is something warranty for safety or liability wise, I'd rather take it in to the stealership and let them deal with it. I'd have no issue fixing a seatbelt on a BMW... but then again I've never seen a seatbelt in a BMW break... zing
That also reminds me, somewhat on the same topic, I typically use Haynes manuals:
(I mean no offense to Crystal or any others who might post answers or help to me)
Is that the default go-to manual for these Escapes or is there something else (Bentley or other) that would be more comprehensive or "better"?? I'm just looking for torque specs and capacities mostly but the rest does come in handy.
Thanks.

Thanks for following up. As an FYI, the Safety Restraint Warranty is for 5 years or 60,000 miles, so it might be worthwhile to give your local Ford Dealership a call. The service manager will be in the best position to make any warranty decisions. Let us know how you decide to proceed.

So who would I need to talk to at the dealer to find out if this 5-year Safety Restraint Warranty is real/legit?
EDIT: Trying to send a PM to FordService and getting frustrated. The forum says I need 5 posts to do so, I have 9 posts and have logged in & out a few times but still cannot access the private messaging feature. Advice?

I thought I answered that when you first posted - you need 5 posts + 10 days as a member.

You did answer it. I have nine (9) posts and I joined on March 20, 2105 which means including today I have been a member for 69 days. On the other hand, I may have made my 5th post today; does it mean that PM is enabled ten days AFTER your 5th post?

See what happens tomorrow after the nightly batch jobs run, I'll bet it'll start working for you...
EDIT: Yes, you made your 5th post today at 10:04 A.M. MDT

I'd recommend speaking with the service manager at the dealership directly. Additionally, you may want to reference your Warranty Guide when calling. Here's some information I found on page 11:
"Your vehicle’s safety belts and air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) are covered for an extended Safety Restraint Coverage Period, which lasts for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first."
You can download a free copy of your Warranty Guide here: https://owner.ford.com/tools/account...r-manuals.html Since you don't appear to have PM access yet, you can contact our Customer Relationship Center at 1-800-392-3673 if you need additional assistance. Keep us posted; I'll hang around this thread in case you have any questions.
