Motor swap help

Was just told my 292 y block needs to be rebuilt. However, I was quoted $2900 for the job. How much would it cost for me to swap the motor out for a freshly rebuilt 302? What would have to be modified? same motor mounts? Labor involved? Same bell housing? Debating on doing the swap but if it is too spendy I'm afraid I can't keep the truck! Thanks for the help!

Gabe, Your engine in a front mount and the end of that era. The after market folk like Carolina Classics, Carpenter, and most others sell a kit to so to side swap. I believe you will have to swap the engine and tranny as a set.

Since you mentioned it, what are your budget limits? A 302/aod, 300-6/aod, 4.2/od or a newer set. I would look at 2010 or newer for a set. You will have to factor in the parts plus the labor.

Garages today are using computer programs to tell them what to charge for a job. Some of those can be pricey.

If the rest of the truck's in good shape you're better off having someone reliable rebuild it with QUALITY parts.
You can potentially save yourself some substantial cash by pulling the 292 yourself then delivering it to the re builders or perhaps swapping for a fresh rebuild.
Key words for the whole deal- RELIABLE and QUALITY.

$2900 doesn't seem unreasonable if they do the complete engine. I have $3000 budgeted for mine with me doing most of the work as I am going to kick the power up a bit.
