Parking Brake lining dimensions 1948 F-4

I have been reviewing the threads on this topic for some time and I still have questions about the lining width and thickness that I should order. I got the transmission out today and compared the band with the images of those who've been here before. Most of those I reviewed are using 2" lining material, but the band on my brake measures pretty darn close to 2 1/2". It appears that the lining should be about the same width as the band, so that would put me at using a 2 1/2" lining, wouldn't it? I have also perused the manual on this topic and it provides no details on the correct lining thickness, does anyone have any ideas?

Jolly Roger Joe has an F4 and did his lining. I did a quick look through his thread and didn't find which lining he bought.
Do you have a shop manual? My 54-55 manual has the lining 2.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick for the larger trucks.
I didn't find the size in the parts catalog. My guess is yours is that size as well.

Here is where I got my lining:
McMaster-Carr
If you figure out the size for sure, it's all available there. Three feet of the metal free should do you.

Hey Joe, I have a shop manual and have referred to it several times in the past during the brake rebuild, but I completely forgot that it has a fairly comprehensive specifications section near the back. I appreciate you pointing that out to me. I guess I haven't used it enough to remember all the information that's in there. Many thanks!

I don't know how many times I have fretted over a problem. Then it hits me to look at the manual. I still do it, but I'm getting a little quicker at reaching for the manual.

You need to show us the results of your work on this.

I ordered my brake lining material from McMaster Carr, p/n 6175K831, 2 1/2" wide and 1/4" thick. I only needed 24 5/8" long but I ordered 3 feet as I wanted to experiment on drilling the holes and attaching the rivets ahead of time.

I also ordered the rivets from McMaster Carr, p/n 97451A651 which are 9/64" diameter and 9/32 long. These worked perfectly.

My build thread shows this starting at post number 1022.

Hope that helps.

Hey Joe- thank you. I ordered the friction material on Saturday, holding off on the rivets until I took mine out to assess the size, but now I have also ordered the rivets too. I got the lining off yesterday and it had apparently been waiting for someone like me to come along and replace it.

Ok marauder I have a question and it's more I'm to lazy to research it! The lug nuts on my 1949 f-4 lefty loosey and righty tightly or is one of the sides reverse threads?

You should have left-handed threads on the left side, unless someone has swapped out the hubs/rear. If you take a wire brush or wheel to the front nuts and the tip of the rear inner cap nuts you might see an "L".

Yes, one side is stamped "L" and the other side is stamped "R".

I just wanted to say thanks to you guys for this info. It's something I need to do on my F4 and F6 - and hadn't taken time to sort it out. You saved me a lot of time!!

As a confusion factor, you could possibly find the hubs had been switched from left to right. As said, look at the studs for markings or at the threads.
