Transmission (automatic) fluid & filter 5/23/2015

I have a mid year 2001 F350 with automatic.
I plan on changing transmission fluid & filter this week-end. I read over Marks instructions...
Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission - Ford-Trucks.com

This variation is what i did.
Drain fluid at pan, remove pan, replace filter, then re-assemble.
Disconnect the return line from the transmission.
Attach a clear line to the return & the other end of line into a one gallon jug.
Pour 6 quarts of Mercon V fluid in.
Start engine and slowly shift through gears once, run until i pump 4 quarts out, then shut off engine.
Pour 4 quarts of Mercon V fluid in.
Run engine until I pump 4 quarts.
Pour 4 quarts of Mercon V fluid in.
Run engine until I pump 4 quarts.
Pour 4 quarts of Mercon V fluid in.
Run engine until I pump 4 quarts.
Connect return line to transmission.
**Make sure i reassembled everything.**
Top off Mercon V fluid as needed.
Start engine and idle for a minute.
Took truck for a drive, working great.

EDIT: Changing above as Mark chimes in and a big thank you for the input/guidance .
**Fellow FTE team, I sent Mark a PM as I started this thread to encourage his input.**

Reread Mark's instructions. It sounds like "your" sequence is incorrect. I would follow "his" sequence.

Why? You have only pumped out about one third of the total. Why stop here?

Maybe I'm full of myself, but why is your procedure better than mine?

I am trying to understand, to me steps 5 & 6 go back and forth.
I read it as pumping multiple fresh quarts through for disposal-is that correct-am I looking to see fresh oil coming out the clear line before flush is finished?)

(1) Is it shift through gears, see bubbles, shut off engine?
(2) How/why is only one third pumped?
(3) Better? I said considering and I need your input. That is the reason I PM'd you.

I have held off doing this in hopes of getting your input so I do not screw it up.

EDIT After re-reading your instructions, it sounds like first in first out (old fluid to new fluid)
I am about to cross my fingers and get this job finished.

There are around 6 quarts in the pan. When you start the engine those six quarts get pumped out of the pan, and six other quarts come out of the cooler line. There are about 12 quarts of old fluid in the trans at this time. No matter how much longer you run the engine those 12 are not coming out without new fluid behind them to push them out. That's why you have to stop twice and refill the pan.

FTE should put together a "Best of Mark Tranny Quotes" and offer as a bonus when we renew our FTE subscription. He is funny as all get out! Maybe drop the the word tranny. It may be misconstrued.

Nothing better on a Sunday morning than a hot cup of coffee and a great transmission thread.......
