Looking for an evaporator core for a 1986 F150. Can't afford the $100 one from the parts store and I really need it for this Texas heat. Doesn't have to be new, just in good working order. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

 

$100.00 for an evaporator core is CHEEEEP for that kind of part for any vehicle in general. I saw the O'Reilly's site lists it at $79.99. Even when I was 18 making $4.50/hr at the local auto parts store I could afford that...

Yeah I was able to afford it during the winter months when I didn't need it but I got laid off and have since enrolled and have been paying for school by doing side jobs. I'm about to start on a forklift tech job but I don't want to wait until then. Its not even summer yet and I'm already dying in this heat.

 

Working on A/C systems are not cheap. If you found a evap core(why do you need it?) how are you going to afford to get someone to vacuum it out and put refrigerant in it? Has it been converted to 134a? The conversion kits are about $60.

 

What color is your truck? My 86 F150 is a factory no air truck and black... I painted the roof white and it helped.

 

I know its the evap cause I went to change the orifice tube and the lines were completely clogged with stuff and the freon will get stuck there. There is no freon in the system now. I had it drained when I was working at the dealership. My 86 is SUPPOSED to be the brown and tan scheme but the guy I bought it from wrecked it and now its mostly primer. Gonna get it painted soon.

 

And yes it has been retrofitted to 134

 

If its not leaking why not get a can of A/C flush and flush it out? Long as the compressor didn't fail it should flush out what ever is in the system.

 

If the lines are clogged then the compressor is bad.Nothing else puts solids in the system unless you had the lines disconnected and dirt dobbers made nests in them.

 

Sounds like if you want AC then you need to produce about $500-$600 and that is if you know how to do the work.

 

Basically cause a rebuilt York Compressor if it is a York will set you back $240 that is what I paid for mine for my '78 Mercury. I also paid another $125 for a reman clutch as I wanted to maintain the inertia weight ring. Then I had to have suction hoses made up from the evaporator to the accumulator to the compressor and that cost me another $100 right there.


In total not including labor and doing the work myself and not including refrigerant I ended up with $465 for all that I have. But the price will vary based off location and who you know if you can get a deal worked out.
