Have a 2004 F250 crew cab with the notorious 6.0L.. ive noticed what i believe is my tranny or maybe torque converter.? What happens is when i back out the drive way and the go into drive, i hear and feel a rough loud clink down under even when im at a stop sign.. Any ideas im a first time truck and diesel owner due to my field of work. Also it has a rought time starting in the mornings or anytime the truck is completely cold. Then after it warms up it behaves like it should. also ill get on the throttle and when i come to a stop, the idle is rough and slowly comes back to normal. ...???

 

Any repair history ? like last tranny flush, oil change so on , take a look at the carrier bearing, u joints, if 4x does it do it then aswell or just 2x? as far as the rest Do you have a Gauge ? like scan gauge or a I phone to add a app.

 

Check FICM volts cold start there is a test procedure in the tech folders another reason to have a scan gauge

 

Mainly in 2wd. Its pretty lloud clinck. sometimes it wont clink till im going about 5mph. Sometimes as soon as i press the gas pedal. And whats the app you speak of. I went to grease monkey about a month and a half ago. Worst choice ever. Im due here soon . This time ill do the oil change myself. along with engine oil filter and fuel filter. I have some hot shot secret that im going to try out for the first time.

He worked on the actual developement of the transmisson in the 6.0.

 

The problem is in the driveshaft. There is a slip joint that is dry. Ford sells a special grease for this. You need to take the slip joint apart and slather it with the special grease. Regular grease will work, but you'll have to do it again in a couple weeks.

 

You have some things going on , Charging system needs to be looked at Battery's, Alternator for start your FICM cold don't want to see anything below 45v on a good system 48/49 all day long. Thank you Mark for chimeing in , why is there not a grease Zerk for this area , My Tractor slip yolk has one you would think ford Oh never mind

 

Not to hijack but I have had the same problem for a few weeks now I took it to a mechanic they threw parts at it about 700 dollars and it still does it. Were can I get this grease at and how hard is it to take off?

 

Any Ford dealer will have this grease. It's blue.

It isn't hard to get to. You need to remove the driveshaft and lube the slip yoke. There are different slip yokes depending on 4x4, 4x2, long bed, short bed, standard cab, crew cab, extended cab, and all the permutations of the above.

 

You can also use the blue marine grease. It has fibers in it and sticks very well. The fibers also seem to have a cushioning effect. At one time there was talk of drilling the outer joint and installing a zerk fitting for future maint. I don't recall anyone coming back and saying that the zerk created a balance problem.
