Got myself a 1978 custom

Been looking for a good project for awhile and found this.. Needs lots of work but that's half the fun. Got it for $1000. Figured that was a fair price. Has a 460 in it.

Welcome to FTE! Looks like a pretty good truck for the $$$. What are your plans for it? Daily driver? Work truck? Fully restored show truck?

Going to be a daily driver. Needs an exhaust and back window. Any issues these trucks have I should look for or know about? Only other ford I own is my 55f100. So any advice would be great.

Nice buy for the price. Around here that would sell higher.

Hey if those bottles and cans in the back were in Oregon you'd get a rebate!

Nice looking truck. My first worry would be front suspension. I'm reasonably certain those are the same basic setup as newer Bronco's & F150's which I'm quite familiar with. Specific concern areas would be: Radius arm bushings, axle pivot bushings, ball joints, tie-rod ends and then the one at the end of the Pittman arm (name escapes me). If "most" of those have some play or are destroyed, I'd just take a whole weekend, order the good stuff, and do it all at once. Hopefully ball joints and such are not too rusted in. While you're in there take care of any brake and hub work. You'll be disconnecting the front drive shaft so do any u-joint work.

Good luck, keep us updated.

Be on the lookout for a post from HIO on what steps, in what order, you need to take ...

The front axle is solid so you don't have to worry about most of that stuff, radius arm bushings maybe, but it has a track bar and the bushings on that could be worn. The 4x4's had a tendency to crack the frame at where the steering box mounts due to the bolts loosening, make sure that is good and the box is tight, if it sat for a while you definitely will want to do brakes and fuel tank (maybe a cleaning would be enough), if not you should be golden, just plan on doing a fluid change of all fluids and a tune up

Anyone make patch panels for these beds or will I need to find another one and cut out what I need? This one was cut in the back and is rusted on the other side. Previous owner also just put a new carb on it and alternator. Missing air filter so ill be getting that asap. Tailgate is dented in pretty good. Cleaned out the bed and inside cab, only real bad spots are on bed and couple small holes in floor of cab

LMC sells patch panels:
Truck Parts and Truck Accessories

I imagine some of the higher-quality catalogs (NPD, DC, et al) probably do too, but haven't looked.
