Could you give a little more information? Are the buttons just missing from your overhead console so you're not knowing which one to push? Is something not working correctly with your 4wd? I've got an '88 with push button along with the Ford service manual. We should be able to get this figured out.

Here's a picture of the overhead console in my '88.
To put the truck in 4x4 I push the bottom button. After a second I hear a click then the light on the side of the button comes on. After that the truck should 'feel' different, especially if you turn the steering wheel on dry pavement. Not good to drive it on pavement in 4x4 but ok as a test. Then to put the truck in 4x4 low I take the transmission out of gear then push the top button, wait a second and the light comes on. It's easy to tell if you're in low because the truck will have absolutely no speed. To come out of 4x4 low I push the buttons again while in neutral, then shift into reverse and drive backwards 5 or 10 feet. Regular 4x4 might come out without needing to reverse, not sure, I always go backwards to be safe.
I'm still not entirely sure I understood your problem, hope that helps though.
