50 F3, flathead, Toyota box, need headers

I just finished installing a Toyota box on my 50 F3 with a flathead v8.The left exhaust manifold touches the Toyota box. I was going to use headers since I wanted dual exhaust. I also want to keep the clutch and use the stock steering wheel.

I was planning on using Speedway's center dump headers. They appear to be similar in size to Sanderson. The Sanderson headers might "hug" the engine closer. I have read that a lot of people use Red Headers.

So has any one installed any of these headers and could recommend a solution that would fit?

Couldn't you use the stock manifold, and run duals off that? There are also stock Car manifolds that have rear exit, as I recall. They hug the block as tight as anything. Headers don't really benefit a street flathead.

Since the stock manifold rests on the Toyota box, I cannot use it. I need a setup someone has installed that will clear the Toyota box. I have no problem keeping a "stock type" manifold if I can get clearance away from the steering box.

Can you post a picture of that? I can't imagine the Toy box being that close to the engine. Is it just that close at one point?

The first picture shows the Tyota box as it relates to the engine.

Toy box next to engine

1/4 inch clearance I got by lifting transmission 3/4 inch off cross member

Can you move the box into the rail any further?

Red's headers might clear that, I can take measurements if you need them

I can't help with the header question, but go into user cp in the blue band at the top of page and turn on receive PMs. I live in Durham and want to see if you'd like to get together and kick tires sometime. If you don't want to receive PMs, then PM (left click my user name and select send PM) or email me your email addy if interested.

The Toy box is less than 1/8 of an inch from the frame. I can move it if I cut the frame 1/2 inch and then trim 1/2 inch off the mounting bracket. I worry about the steering column aligning with the Toy box if I do that. I also wonder what happens to the drag link if the pitman arm moves over 1/2 inch.

Can you tell me how much clearance you have with Red Headers? I guess what I need is how the headers drop as they go from the front of the engine to the rear. As you can see in the picture the stock manifold bottom edge hits the corner of the box. For the Red Header to clear the rear exhaust port would be to be around 5 inches from the bottom bolt that holds the header to the engine. See my attempt at drawing.

It's close. The outside of the header is about 4-1/2" from the top edge of the frame rail. From the rear bolt to just above centerline of the header is 5"

These are the Sandersons

I'm not impressed with the quality, they have a small leak and as they are ceramic coated I can't weld them
They also foul the stock dipstick, I had to use a flexible one

If you need measurements let me know

Do you have a picture of the sanderson's on the driver's side where the steering is. It looks as if the center exhaust protrudes quite a bit from the engine

did you see this pic in the tips and tricks topic? Flathead with headers and Toy box in F1.
You'll have to ask Pete (petemcl) what headers they are.

I will give the Red Headers a try. I will let this thread know if they work.
