1989 F250 7.3L
hello,
I was looking for some feedback on what to look for while checking out a 1989 F250 7.3L with 161K on the clock with auto transmission. guy has confirmed that there was oil in the coolant but no water on the dipstick. he also stated that SCA's have not been used to his knowledge and that he was not aware of what that is.
I know these engines can suffer from cavitation and can self destruct around 150k if the coolant additives have not been put in. is this something I should worry about? he used it for an in bed camper, but he doesn't like the truck, or so he claims.
this truck will be a farm truck for getting hay, feed and hauling horses to and from a riding arena about 5 miles from my house.
Thanks for any help!

I would start by reading this thread:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...tech-info.html
And I thought there might have been a new owners thread but its not stickied, unless I'm just thinking the wrong name and its the thread I just linked to.
A few very reliable sources have said that cavitation fears are likely overrated and very few blocks actually have failed from cavitation. Flush the cooling system and add coolant with SCA's and you'll likely be ok.
Oil in coolant, but not the other way, is often caused by leaking o-rings in the oil cooler. There are several threads on that subject. Not the easiest repair, but not that hard to do. Oil is running higher pressure than the coolant, so thats possibly why it hasn't leaked the other way.

are there any good step by step sticky's on here for the 7.3L oil cooler replacement? I have found a lot for the Powerstrokes but none for the IDI.
thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

Newbies never check any of the read first threads, or use search. Instead they waste their time waiting for someone to answer the same questions over and over again....

Back on track... we need some pictures of that new truck!

I will have pictures posted this evening. it ain't pretty, but it will defiantly serve its new job as a farm truck quite well.
