Question newbie: ID motor in '52 F6

hey folks,

i'm looking at buying a '52 F6 -- don't know much about them. i'm assuming from my limited research that the only motors were I6 and flat V8. the photo from this seller doesn't look like either to me:

mystery motor

anybody know what this could be?

also, would VIN tell me the wheelbase or frame length (if it were platform or stakebed)?

thanks in advance!

Welcome to FTE, can't be sure from the picture, but it looks like a Y block, and NO that would not be original. There were several engines available in 1952,
226 & 254 Flathead 6
215 OHV 6 (but I don't think those were put in an F6)
239 & 337 Flathead 8 (337 only available in F7 & F8)
279 & 317 OHV V-8 only in F7 & F8
There was no such thing as a VIN in 1952, but the Serial number will not tell you the length of the frame nor the bed.

Welcome to the forum!

What little of the engine I see is the end of a valve cover. In '52 F-7's and F-8's an OHV engine was available. Someone may have swapped it in. A decent picture would help, as would the serial number off the data plate in the glovebox.

Welcome to FTE.

I have a 52 F6. Project. Been sitting untouched this year.
Need to either get it finished or sell it to you!

My friend has a 51 F6 flatbed truck he's going to sell. no engine or trans but i think it was originally a 254 six cylinder. Located in salt lake.
Mine has the 239 v8.

Welcome!

Welcome to our threads!
Your engine photo doesn't look original to the 52 F6 to me except the placement of the heater hoses at the firewall. The radiator, engine set-back, air cleaner, and dip stick placement are all more modern. As you and Harleysmn say, the original engine would be either the flathead 6 or 8. The only particulars about the truck your ID number disclose are series (F6), engine (M for I6, R for 239V8), where built code, and five-digit sequence number.

Welcome to the forum. Looking at the engine pictured, I believe I see ridges at the end of that valve cover which would be indicative of a truck or Lincoln Y block.
