Dont know if that part is on block or cam. this is all the way at very bottom of distributor
You said when you crank over the motor is spins really fast? Like you lost compression in some cylinders? You know how the motor should sound when cranking , if it spins abnormally fast I would say the chain jumped on ya. You can still have some compression on some cylinders, but a squeeze test should be done on all 8, I have seen alot of Ford small blocks eat distributors, from the cam walking, most people use bronze gears on the dist. avoid steel, its not a race engine. Do the rock test and see how much slack you have in the chain. If the chain did jump that means you have gear parts in your oil pan which will work there way to the pickup and block it. There is no easy way around that. I will hope for the best, good luck.

have 1986 f150 xlt cajun cruiser 302 fi, what i thought were metal shavings when put in fingers and rubed it broke up, like hard gunk, the old distributor had a chip on dizzy gear in one spot about 1/4 inch, cam gear looked ok maybe a little worn looking kinda hard to tell, think maybe best to check timing chain and gear? thank God have 1983 f150 for backup till then

just removed timing chain, sure looked jumped, has 2 broken teeth, could almost take chain off as it sat, will replace with new set, also drop oil pan and clean out. Any other advice depreciated.

WOW! My eyes may need to be checked, but it looks like the cam gear has a lot of missing teeth, as well as pretty much all the rest are worn down to nothing. A lot of slack too! I think a half an inch is the maximum allowed.

He has one of the plastic coated gears. I would drop the pan and clean it out. Those big chunks of missing plastic teeth are probably stuck in the screen to the oil pump.

I've changed two timing sets recently, both of them the plastic coated variety, but those cam sprockets were in much better shape than his. Is it common for the sprocket to be that chewed up? Looks like it's pretty excessive wear!
Then again, it doesn't really look like that motor has been taken care of either.

i was given this truck about one year ago, it was sitting for about 5 or so years, the previous owner was brick layer he hauled every thing with it sand, brick etc. i put about 800.00 or so into it to get it on road, ran it for about 1 yr. takes 1 quart every week, can"t sink much more money into it, would love to overhaul it, maybe if things get better, just can"t right now, i just love these old ford trucks, know what i mean

I have done a couple. Even though the engine is wore out, you wil be surprised how much better it starts and runs once you get the new chain in place.

I have nursed some pretty bad engines along in my years. If you find you get a bunch of oil going into the air cleaner and pretty much all over because of the blow by, take a old piece of garden hose or heater hose and hook it to the valve cover fitting(the one opposite the PCV valve) and run it down over to the frame and let it dump into a old coffee can. That will let some of the pressure out of the engine and keep all that mess out of the carb.

hay Franklin2 how did you know? my 1983 f150 has this oil problem i changed the cap on valve cover but did not help, still getting over blow. So i just insert fitted hose into it then run other end into can down by frame, does hose need yo be fitted tight into can? i appreciate you.
