EGT Sensor #3, how in the heck...

Since I got the Check Engine light today and the ScanGaugeII shows it to be the EGT Sensor #3. I'll take it to the shop tomorrow and let warranty cover it.

But, this evening I though I would crawl under the truck and just make sure nothing came unplugged or a wife pulled loose. I keep two extra sensors in a emergency tool kit for one of those worry times of the sensor going south while on the road.

My question is how to you get to that sucker? I couldn't figure out a reasonable way to get a wrench on it with room to move. Least of all bend my arms in such a way that a contortionist would be proud to do.

What am I missing, is there a secret someone would care to share

I'd have to get under and have a look. That one is gonna be tight for sure. I think, If I recall correctly, there is the pressure sensor in that area too.

I was able to get a wrench between the frame and DPF. About an inch gap on mine. Not one to do on a roadside when the pipe is hot.

Actually an inch of clearance would be nice. My frame is notched a bit in this area for clearance of all the OEM crap under there. On a good day it would be tough, don't even what to think about having to do it on the side of the road someday.

Luckily it's the #2 and #4 that seem to go bad frequently.

Unless you have taken pre-emptive measures of removing and reinstalling with anti siege grease, you will most likely need a torch to remove them on the side of the road.

Having two in my parts kit saved me a week+ waiting for nationwide back order. And thanks to this forum, I knew what it was when it happened to me on the middle of nowhere and let it cool down so I could limp into a dealer.

Hope the mpg robbing (for some but not all) re-flash puts an end to the sensor failures.

cut the wire and use a socket. Go over the top of the DPF.

Make sure to use a 6 point....a friend of mine found out that 12 points don't work too well. It just rounds them off. I think most everyone but him knows that though.

I had the re-flash done on my truck when the recall pretty much was issued. And still got the check engine light and code for the #3 EGT sensor which is kind of bad news. Good news is that I could still drive the truck to the dealer and it didn't shut down on me.

Guess I have a few tools to add to my "Roadside Repair Box". Appreciate the information and idea.

The reason why I went ahead and put anti-seize on all of my sensors was one, to locate them, try out the tools I carry, and see what else I needed to get the job done. I still have to get mine re-flashed.

Less than a 1/2 for me on the flash. I barely had time to sit down and check my phone for messages.

I got 3 of the 4 EGT sensors out of my truck to hit them with anti-seize. Number 3 seems to be frozen in place and my flare nut wrench (Mac tools) is just splaying when trying to get it out. This was when my truck has less than 1,500 miles on it... I will be trying again with the truck up to temp, but working around the exhaust when it is hot is not my most favorite job...
