knocking noise
That thing started scraping and clattering today. What's going here?

Jeez Louise..... Are you kidding? Your first step should not be posting that kind of question on FTE. It's worthless as is the picture.
YOU have to do some hands-on investigation by using that tool between your ears.

Then tell me what's up with the noise.Why do I get it when it is starting. Is it the alternator?

You've posted a picture of what looks like your exhaust and bell housing ... not sure which you're trying to get. Noise when starting makes me think the latter ... I'd say at this point, you need to take it to a mechanic because you may be in over your head.

If it is just scraping and clattering at start up you may need to grease your exhaust.

If it sounds like a rod knock and is an auto tranny, it could be the torque converter

is your exhaust lose, mine when I started it up it would rattle against the frame rail, and still does when decelerating.
