Question Flywheel and Bellhousing HELP!

Okay so let me start with the truck: 1985 F150 with 69 302 (originally 315w), 4x4, single cab, regular bed, DB Electrical PMGR starter for 164 tooth (manual)

I have been having constant starter issues. I had a buddy try to crank it over while I looked at the starter up under the truck. It was just popping out and hitting the flywheel but not lining up. I did some digging and came upon 157 tooth vs 164 tooth flywheels as well as 28oz vs 50oz imbalance.

I believe what I put on the truck is a 164 tooth 50oz imbalance flywheel. I know for a fact that I should have put on a 28oz flywheel and I'm just glad that I haven't driven the truck too much with the off-balance flywheel.

What I am not sure about is whether I should buy a 164 tooth or 157 tooth flywheel. My starting issues would make sense if the bellhousing is a "small bellhousing" or one for a 157 tooth flywheel and I am using the wrong tooth count. I am just trying to be 100% sure before I make the purchase. I remember the PO telling me how difficult it was for him to find a bellhousing to fit the engine.

Can anyone tell me from my pictures what bellhousing I have? I can pull it off if necessary i guess. I have checked every picture on here and it doesn't match any of the bellhousings with pictures on this site: Bellhousings Does anyone know any measurements I can do?

Can anyone confirm that this is in fact a 164 tooth 50oz flywheel?<br/>

All truck applications used a 164 tooth bell housing. And since you pulled a 351W out (that was a bad choice in my opinion replacing it with a 302, but that's another story) the flywheel that the 351 came with would be correct for a 69 302. Make sure also you use the thin metal block plate between the bell and engine block too, as this is what indexes the starter to the flywheel. The teeth themselves are the same between both flywheels, so there's no change in starters from one to another.

E1ZR flywheel

That large counterweight indicates a 50 oz in balance, so I would say that it's a 1982 or later Mustang 302 (5.0) unit.

hello, running into the same issue but I used a 95’ 302 to replace my 76’ 302. Starter would not work when I tried to crank it. Did you ever find a solution? I have a 164 tooth flex plate and I’m currently pulling the engine to see what flex plate is on it currently. I know the later models need a 50 oz so I figured if it needed a 157 tooth I’d order a 50 oz one and try that.

ok I have issue with my truck
i pulled a 302 out of a 1983 f-150 4x4
and dropped a 1978 351w in its place it has a tight fit to get the flywheel in. That’s not normal I know but will it fit with no issues or damage to anything
