2005 Explorer XLT, P0401 Code

I have a P0401 code that just fired today. I tried to clear the code, but it came right back on the drive home. There are no drivability symptoms so far; just the CEL.

It looks like the DPFE sensor is part of the EGR valve on this model. Does anyone know if the 401 code usually means that the EGR needs to be changed, or if there are other common causes of this code that I need to check? The DPFE sensor fixed the same issue on my Escape, but that was an easy $34 and 30 seconds repair. Looking for some 2004+ year owners' experience (I guess 2002 and 2003 models had the DPFE?).

EDIT: 4.0L V6 engine

Thanks!

DPFE is an emissions-issue sensor: it inputs info to the PCM to tell it whether the EGR valve is functioning, and how much it is moving, if at all. If emissions testing is required where registered, it will likely fail, especially if the CEL is on when testing. If no testing needed, the vehicle may be driven indefinitely with the inoperative DPFE: illegal, yes, but not likely to be prosecuted. impish

Had the same issue on my 04 4.0l, chose to remove the EGR and clean it to remove the carbon build up. Was easier than I thought it was going to be. Have not had the error code return. I definitely suggest that you try cleaning it first before replacement. It only took about an hour and half to complete. Just be careful with the tube that attaches to the exhaust manifold, it can be easily broken as told to me by a mechanic friend.
