ELM327 OBDII scanners...???s

What am I doing wrong??
I get a ton of super advice here for my Ford Trucks, so I will ask my generic question and hope for the same awesome response

Using a couple different OBDII elm327 scanners on my Fusion.
Cannot get either to connect with the vehicle's ECU.
Both pair with my phone's bluetooth and seem to do everything but hook to the ECU.
Have had 50/50 chances getting my first one to hook up to other vehicles, so I got a second and different looking one to see if it was the scanner.
Running Torque on my phone.
I have had it hook to the car previously but no matter what I do now neither scanner connects to the ECU.
I know that these cheap deals have hit and miss luck.
But wondering if there is any certain sequence to follow or if I am just missing something before I get too carried away.
Power lights on the elm327s goes on, but nothing else.
No pc or ecu.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated as always.
THANKS

?? Anyone?

Anyone have any advice or links to show me what I am missing here...
Or are these things just hit and miss.
I know that they are cheap enough and I have read a good amount of them are junk, but...
I have 2 scanners now and unable to get either to hook to any of my vehicles ECUs.
I just ordered a 3rd thinking the first may have worked for a little while, the 2nd junk from the get go, maybe???
Check engine light in my Fusion pops on about once a week now.
Back in the good old days when I was able to connect, I saw P0128 coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp.
I am wondering if it is the stat or possibly sending unit for the computer?
Anyone know if there is a separate sender for the gage and computer or both same?
Gage seems like it is in correct place.
Thinking stat may be working OK and just a sender separate for computer only is trouble...or wishful thinking.
I have a "laser" thermometer deal that I would like to use on the outside of stat housing or near sender(s) and compare to ECU reading if/when I am ever able to get a scanner to work.
Appreciate any help and/or ideas and/or advice!!

Must have been my lucky night FINALLY last night.
The newer of my 2 old ELM327s was able to connect to the car's ECU.
Happy days, just wish I knew what made it work finally.

I have used 2 different adaptors. The first was cheap garbage. The second one cost a bit more and connects every time.

Some of the cheap ones are just junk and to be avoided.

A NEW question regarding these scanners and the Torque App

Are you supposed to be able to read and/ or reset ABS codes with these at all?

I was playing around with the fuses and wiring for my trailer lights and some how had brake warning and ABS warning lights on the dash afterwards.
While no codes were shown when scanned, I got the lights turned off when I cleared codes.

I am also looking at my son's Saturn Vue now and it has ABS issues.
Wondering if I need to buy new more expensive scanner and/or app to access the ABS functions and codes.
Appreciate any help (as always)

THANKS !!!!
