Found an unknown part under my truck. Need help identifying
Hey guys / gals! I have been lurking here for a while. I have not had a problem or question about my truck that I haven't found an answer for on here until now.
First the truck!
I have recently acquired a 1977 F250 4x4 "Lowboy". The truck is mostly unmolested but has a flatbed.
Recent changes fixes.
New head gaskets.
New steer shaft u-joints.
Temporary floor repair (light gauge sheet metal, screws and rubberized waterproofing)
New Starter (Nose cone failure).
On to my problem. Today I was changing the gear oil in my rear diff and found a part I do not recognize on the ground. I always work on my truck in the same location in my yard (shady), so I know it came from my truck. What I don't know is where on my truck it came from.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Haha. Maybe I came off a little too confident in my assumption that this came off of my truck . Let's rephrase, I think, maybe, probably it came off of my truck. My fear is that it came from under a rocker on one of the heads or some other critical application.
I have been driving it daily and have not noticed any issues, but thought I would post it up here to confirm it wasn't anything to worry about.
I will keep an eye on things and post if I find where it came from.
Thanks!

How do you start a british car, roll it down hill and pop the clutch
How do you turn on the headlights of a british car, push the switch on your flash light
How do you sell a british car, push it over the cliffs of Dover and call your insurance adjuster.
Maybe the part was on a frame rail and fell off.

Actually I think I've seen that piece. Upper frame rail about3" away from the steering box bracing in the frame, firewall side of steering box. Just converted a 79 350 into a trailer and I knocked something very similar to that out of the upper frame rail. Will look to see if its laying around the shop some where. Mine was full of dirt and wasnt being used for anything, if I find it I'll post a pic.

I have figured it out! I will post pics of where it came from when I get back out to the truck. It is part of the factory steering lower joint (slip joint?). The end on the shaft had a pressed in pin. Each end of the pin had a bushing like the one in the pics that rode in a slot. I read somewhere about the joint but cannot remember what it is called.
Thanks anyway I guess

It is not part of the factory steering lower joint (slip joint?). The end on the shaft had a pressed in pin.

Lower steering shaft & coupler assy (3B676 in pic).

And even if there was, they couldn't fall out, because the shaft & coupler is located inside the steering column.
Outside the steering column, the 3A525 "rag joint" bolts to the flange of the coupler, then attaches to the input shaft of the steering gear box.

Here is a diagram that represents the sheering shaft I have.
Edit: I replaced the "coupler" with an after market universal joint to correct some serious steering slop. So, the part didn't fail out, it was removed without me every noticing it was there to begin with.
More pics of the part in question. The part I found is listed as part 3C668 in the diagram.

^ This pic represents 1966 F100 4WD & 1967/72 F100/250 4WD - The same lower steering shaft and coupler was also used in 1973/75 F100/250 4WD, here's the pic.
