78 F150 transmission binding

ok so I was putting in my rebuilt C6 and got everything lined up and started putting the bolts in. noticed something was binding, and when I went to put the torque converter nuts on, I couldn't turn the flexplate. it bolted up fairly snug already, so I loosened everything back up and it turns again. I have the plug for the converter in the hole, there is a hole by all 4 stud holes for it. any ideas?

Is the converter seated? There are two detents you should have felt when installed as it was spun on.

Also put the trans in neutral to release the trans' parking pawl.

Even in Park, the torque converter should be able to spin freely (otherwise you couldn't start the engine).

I'll second the not fully seated possibility though.

Ah yes. Thanks for the correction. I don't work in auto trans much.

No problem. Most of my experience is manual too, but I'm fresh on auto due to my current truck project.

I am pretty sure it was seated but I will check tomorrow. I put in a couple long studs so I can slide it back a bit without taking it all the way out. Thanks

Put a straight edge across the bell. It should clear the nose of the converter by half an inch or so. Good luck with it.

ok so apparently my torque converter was NOT seated properly. I slid it back on the studs I put in, the converter stayed on the flexplate. I pried it loose and slid it back onto the shaft, and then slid the whole thing smoothly back into place. the question I have now is, should I drop it and double check to make sure the pump isn't messed up? I had put enough pressure on it that I couldn't turn the engine by hand (as easy as it should anyway) but not sure if the pump is messed up? I really don't want to get it completely back together with tc and all just to drop it out again....thanks

I think it'll be okay.
It's not like ya tried to start the engine with it all bound up.

will it pour fluid out the back end if I put the rest of the bolts in the bellhousing and crossmember, and crank it up and see if its doing anything funny? without mounting the transfer case and everything?

No, it'll be fine. Your transfer case takes 80/90 gear oil.

Make sure to secure it with the bellhousing bolt like it's supposed to be, it will come out otherwise
