What does the Vacuum pump do?

So I pulled my alternator and vacuum pump the other day to get to the thermostat and started cleaning up parts to paint, one of them being the vacuum pump and now I am thinking about it and what it controls. I know it controls parts of the heating/cooling system in the truck but what else does it do?

Thanks Again
Devin

It also powers via vacuum the heater control valve for the air.

^^^^^ For A/C equipped trucks only. Heat-only trucks have mechanical-only controls.

It has no connection to the "cooling system" (i.e. engine cooling).

If you have the C6, the vac pump assists shifting. Climate control selector, power brake assist, and on the vans with rear heating, the vac system regulates the rear heater core supply valve.

It deflates your breasts so you can work under your truck.

I think it would be prudent to install a decent lift kit so you can use a creeper.

Hmm, no one's come up with the obvious answer - it sucks.

Well I wanted to delete it but I guess that's not an option cause I like having brakes. Anyway I got a bunch of parts from the engine bay ready for paint so that's exciting cause its pretty ugly in there now. Does anyone know what kind of oil was in the vacuum pump that I spilled?

Thanks again,
Devin

I thought I remember someone deleting their mechanical vac pump and using an e-vac-pump. They said they were able to get the brake assist with the engine off (weird to think about) because they were doing hypermiling and needed the brake assist so they could kill the engine on downhill slopes. Plus one less belt to turn.

^^^^ This was an electric vacuum pump that could provide sufficient boost to assist our dual-piston front disc brakes and our 12x3 drum shoes? I'd like to see that pump.

How much vac do you need to pull? This one on ebay claims 18-22inHG: http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-volt-electric-vacuum-pump-brake-booster-vacuum-pump-12-volt-new-/351048719483?hash=item51bc225c7b
