I agree with Ross, the throwout bearing is the only thing at risk but the ones that I have seen worn out are due to age more than use. I don't see the risk for the occasional driver . . . or even a daily driver. Lots of these trucks were used in town. But I really would go to 140W.

Yes, you right. I am used to the lights in our small town in rural central PA.

I am from Atlanta too and so I think we can actually run 140 here year round no problem, especially if you keep it in a heated garage as I do. I think I had 140 in my transmission originally but I was unsure of age so I changed it back in March after I gathered input from folks here on correct weight. I went with sta lube 90 weight and had same issues talked about here, grinding at red lights and grinding from 1st to 2nd. Changed to 140 and no issues, it is sta lube as well I picked up at O'reily's, spend the 5 bucks and get the push pump, no mess!

Good to find another Atlanta on the board. I have been thinking about a pump of some sort. I have been using quart squirt bottles but they are a bit of a pain. I'll try to find the StaLube this weekend. Just out of curiosity at which O'Reilys did you find it?

Thanks,
John

O'Reily's in Canton, which is about 50 miles north of downtown. Find the closest one to you and call them and they will order it for you, if they don't have on the shelf. It comes in gallon jugs I think. I work in Atlanta but live in the mountains so my F1 still gets to see the country roads. You will have to come to our next cruise-in in Canton, they put on a great show.

When is the next one? I have in-laws in woodstock so I am up there fairly often. Is this the one put on by Po-Boys?

Jasper Jeep probably has 140W in stock. The owner, Mike Lowe, has been restoring old Ford cars for years.

Dang, I just moved from Roswell to Tybee about a month ago, who knew there were so many old trucks in Atlanta.

I still get to the ATL fairly often and will try and stop by one of the meets.

Back to the topic at hand, with the heavier oil, do you have any issues with double clutching on the down shift? (when you need the shaft to keep spinning)

No issues, I rarely double clutch, I use engine revs and shift quick. When starting, I let the truck pull me into gear. The only time i ever grind is when I get caught at a red light not paying attention and have to start quick.

Finally got the transmission changed to 140W. When I drained the old (3 weeks old) 85w140 I felt like I was panning for gold. There were little flecks everywhere.

How about your little "if you can't find them grind em" problem, are you noticing better shifts?

I did notice better shifts when the system was cold with the 85W-140 but it would get progressively worse as it heated up. I have not yet driven with the straight 140W but I am hoping for the best. I will try driving it to work tomorrow.

Well I can say it is improved but when the transmission oil gets hot (30 minutes of driving) the issue persists. Also I notice I grind more on my 2->3 shifts when it is cold. I guess I am at a happy medium?

Have you checked the condition of the pilot bearing/bushing? Are you using a bushing or ball bearing?
