What engine will work?

I have a 2001 excursion limited with the 5.4 that has a cracked block. What year model engines can I look for that will be a direct plug and play? Or that I can change the intake manifold and throttle body out and use (I just bought a brand new intake manifold for the one with the cracked block). Will any 5.4 with L in the 8th digit of the VIN work?

it would be easier to make a call to any ford dealership and ask for that info, if you get a good parts salesman he will be able to tell you what model trucks you can get an engine from, then look around junk yards or local wrecking service

also try the search bar (advanced search) at the top of the forums theres tons of info on this forum im sure you can find something.

2000-2001 from a SD, Excursion or van is going to be about as direct as you can get (with 99 being a very close second).

One thing you have to keep in mind is if you have EGR or not. If you do, and the new engine doesn't (or, the other way around), you'll want to keep the left exhaust manifold and EGR components (or lack of components) that go with your vehicle.

So will one from a 2001 F150 work if I move all my bolt on accessories from the bad engine? MY current engine does not have the egr.

I would want as late of a 2valve engine as I could find. More spark plug threads and less chance of launching one. I don't see anything long block wise that would stop you from installing. I would plan on using your manifolds, intake and accessories though.
